Fuad Bohsali, MD, joined our division in January as a Medical Instructor and hospitalist at Duke University Hospital after completing a hospitalist fellowship at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore. Learn more about him, his family, and his interests outside of work in our interview.
Where do you work?
I am a hospitalist at the Duke University hospital, so I work predominantly on the 8th and 4th floors, but I see patients all over the hospital and emergency department.
What are your interests in hospital medicine?
I have a major interest in perioperative medicine - basically, the assessment and optimizations of patients' individual risk factors around the time of a surgery. It's a developing field that brings together medicine and surgery strengths to make sure patients stay safe and get out of the hospital healthier and more quickly than they otherwise would have.
How did you get in to this specific field?
I have always loved general medicine. I have enjoyed learning about how our bodies work ever since childhood, and going into medicine has been an amazing opportunity to discuss health and well-being with people. I always felt like the general spectrum of medical knowledge we learned in medical school was so valuable, and staying as a generalist and keeping it all strong has always felt like a natural decision for me.
What brought you to Duke?
My wife and I moved to the area because she works with IBM and was asked to move with the company! My in-laws live here and we just had a child, so moving to be near them has also been a huge support for us.
Is there any research you are doing or plan on doing?
Definitely! I finished a Hospital Medicine fellowship at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center where I focused on perioperative medicine, QI and six-sigma methodology, and learned how to perform some large database trials. I am currently in the process of finalizing research on heart failure as a risk factor in patients with hip fracture.
What are your hobbies or interests outside of work?
I am an avid home chef and have been learning new tricks while here. I love taking cooking classes at the Sur La Table at Southpoint. My next steps will be learning to make baby food from scratch when our 3-month old starts getting solid foods.
Any trips you've taken recently that you would like to share?
My wife Maya and I visit Lebanon on a semi-regular basis; we have lots of family there that we love to visit.
Any recent books you’ve read that you’d like to share?
The Five Invitations by Frank Ostaseski is an introspective written by a man who runs a Buddhist home hospice service and has talked at length with hundreds of people on their deathbeds. He talks about the things that death can teach us about living life fully and appreciating our life through the lens of our mortality.
What is a fun fact about yourself?
In college I used to play the cello in a band called String Theory. We recorded an LP and had t-shirts.
What is your favorite food?
I love food too much to have a favorite. Peruvian chicken? A lightly-charred ribeye steak on a charcoal grill? Tofu Stir-fry? It is impossible to choose.
What is your favorite restaurant?
In this area, we've discovered M Sushi in Durham and love it.
