Faculty Spotlight: Jeff Clough, MD

Meet Jeff Clough, MD, assistant professor of medicine. Dr. Clough completed residency in 2011 at Duke and then spent three years with CMS. In 2014 we were excited to welcome him back to Duke where he now sees patients at Duke Primary Care Pickett Road and has taken on the administrative director role for this practice location.

We asked Dr. Clough several questions about his career and here's what we learned, including a few surprises.

What brought you to Duke?
I was at Duke for my Internal Medicine Residency while my wife Adrienne earned her MBA at Fuqua. After residency, I spent about 3 years in Baltimore primarily working at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) implementing payment and delivery reforms as part of the Affordable Care Act. My wife Adrienne was working as a management consultant and we had our children, Julia and William, while in Baltimore. We knew that we wanted to find a place where we could raise kids and both have great careers. Since we both loved our time in the Triangle and at Duke we started our search here and were fortunate enough to both find jobs we were excited about — Adrienne is an investment manager in Duke's investment office.

What are your interests in the field?
Currently, I practice as a general internist and direct the Pickett Road continuity clinic site where we have 24 internal medicine residents. In addition to internal medicine, I have always had an interest in payment and delivery reform. After working for CMS, I spent my first few years conducting research at the DCRI in this field and continue to be engaged with the Duke-Margolis Center for Health Policy.

What are your hobbies or interests outside of work?
I was a competitive rower in college and continue to love competing whenever I get the chance-mostly running and playing tennis. The photo to the right is from a recent race with fellow Pickett attending, Sharon Rubin, and Duke cardiologist, Don Hegland.

Any trips you've taken recently that you would like to share?
We have a big travel year ahead with plans to go to Paris over Christmas — my children are in a French immersion program and I am hoping they can show us around. After that, we are going to Hawaii in the spring to see my sister who is an intern in the Army internal medicine program.

What is a fun fact about yourself?
Some Duke b-ball facts: this past winter I coached my son's basketball team with Zion Williamson's stepfather and long-time coach Lee Anderson, with Zion's little brother and social media sensation "Noah Williamson" starring on the team. I'm also personally 4-0 in Cameron and looking forward to trying to extend that at this year's Resident-Faculty game.

What is your favorite restaurant?
In Durham, we really like Gonza Tacos and Dos Perros. I'm always looking for an opportunity to take-out Heavenly Buffaloes' wings.
