Yiran Yang, MD, PhD, FACP, joined Duke GIM faculty in August of 2020 and is a hospitalist at Duke University Hospital. Learn more about her in our interview below:
What brought you to Duke?
I did my internal medicine residency at Cleveland while my husband, Dr Christopher Leo, was finishing his geriatric fellowship at Duke. He will join Duke Raleigh Hospital after graduation. We both love the supportive, friendly working environment at Duke, as well as the warm, sunny weather in North Carolina. My 2 boys also enjoy more chances to play outdoor since we moved from NY.
What are your interests in the field?
My interest is to manage acutely ill, hospitalized patients and provide prompt attention to all patient care needs. I am also interested in doing bedside ultrasound guided medical procedures.
How did you get in to this specific field?
I was trained at Fairview Hospital of Cleveland Clinic, which has a large ICU with 36 beds. I was able to do a variety procedures there and luckily have joined the Duke Hospital Medicine procedure team.
What are your hobbies or interests outside of work?
I like music, painting, photographing, reading novels. I play Chinese bamboo flute and a string musical instrument (Guzheng).
What is a fun fact about yourself?
I am from Wuhan, China. The city wasn't famous until the COVID pandemic. It's actually a large, modern city with 8 million people and beautiful scenery.
What is your favorite food? Chinese food
Is there any thing else you would like to share?
I have a PhD degree in microbiology and have worked on thermophilic bacteria and protease in the lab for years.
