Funding opp: Hartwell Individual Biomedical Research Award

The Hartwell Foundation considers Duke University as one of its Top Ten Centers of Biomedical Research in the United States, and has invited Duke to submit nominees for the Hartwell Foundation Individual Biomedical Research Awards program.

Only investigators nominated by the head of an invited research institution are eligible for consideration for the Hartwell Individual Biomedical Research Award.

Each Award is for three years at $100,000 direct cost per year.

  • Duke Internal Deadline: June 20, 2016
  • Sponsor Deadline: September 15, 2016

Diego Bohórquez, PhD, assistant professor of medicine (Gastroenterology), received the Hartwell award in 2015 for his project "Targeting a Gut Sensory Neurocircuit to Modulate Autism Spectrum Disorders."

Internal nomination process

Owing to the sponsor’s restriction on the number of applications that may be submitted from Duke, anyone wishing to pursue nomination should submit the following materials as one PDF.

  • A draft abridged non-technical summary (1 page)
  • A draft abridged technical description of the project (1 page)
  • A CV or biosketch – Please include current and pending sources of funding.

After the internal deadline, the review committee will select three nominees to move forward. They will be notified by email of their selection, on July 6, 2016. On  July 12, the final nominees will attend to a working lunch meeting where they will have an opportunity to hear from the prior winners, and make contact with administrators from foundation development offices on campus and at the School of Medicine who can assist with proposal development.
