Funding opp: Sanford School pilot grants for projects in Udaipur, India

By ajz6@dhe.duke.edu
The Sanford School, in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Management Udaipur (IIMU), and with additional support from the Office of Global Strategy and Programs, is soliciting proposals for small pilot grants. The grants will provide seed money for new ideas that will allow collaboration with IIMU and civil society organizations located in the Indian State of Rajahsthan. "Our hope is that this collaboration eventually will lead to applications for outside independent funding," wrote Nancy Andrews, MD, PhD, dean of the School of Medicine, in a memo to faculty today. Funding for up to five projects will total $25,000 each over three years in diverse areas, including (but not necessarily restricted to) health care; energy; environment and climate change; education; microfinance; social entrepreneurship; economic and social mobility; local democracy and local institutional development; technical, management, and institutional innovations for service delivery and grassroots development; and cultures of development. The review process involves three steps:
  • (1) Submission and review of a draft proposal (by May 28, 2012);
  • (2) Invitation of selected proposal investigators to meet with initiative leaders and partners in Udaipur to flesh out project ideas and discuss implementation (preferably, 15 July – early August 2012); and
  • (3) Submission of the final proposal (by September 30, 2012).
The first phase in the process is submission of a brief proposal of a research idea. This 2-3 page proposal should state the research idea and provide a brief budget outline.
