Gary H. Lyman, MD, MPH, professor of medicine (Medical Oncology) has been selected to be on the editorial board of the Journal of Clinical Oncology.
Dr. Lyman also recently contributed to an ASCO perspective regarding a new study published by JAMA about the effectiveness of axillary dissections (Axillary Dissection vs No Axillary Dissection in Women With Invasive Breast Cancer and Sentinel Node Metastasis).
The study found that axillary dissections following positive sentinel lymph node biopsy in breast cancer patients who underwent lumpectomy with radiation therapy to the breast does not increase survival nor reduce axillary recurrences in breast cancer patients. ASCO notes that these findings support the current trend that more surgery for cancer patients is not necessarily better. Many oncologists are now proceeding with caution when deciding to recommend axillary dissections for early stage breast cancer patients.
