Last week the topic of “MedEd Faculty Development” headlined the Medicine Conference Series for Hospital Medicine at Duke Regional Hospital.
Attendees were treated to a summary of the academic promotion process for clinician-educators, its route in general and more specifically at Duke.
The hospitalist group leader is Dr. Poonam Sharma, associate professor of medicine and associate medical director for Duke Hospital Medicine. The presenter for this event was Dr. Daniella Zipkin, associate professor of medicine and GIM vice chief for education.
There were many pearls from Dr. Zipkin, ranging from qualifications of a clinician-educator and job expectations to creating a personal road map to recognition. She pointed out the diversity amongst educators and the educational domains of scholarship, service, and mentorship. She’s also a proponent of resources via Duke AHEAD, especially to retrieve a template to document the clinician-educator’s e-Portfolio. Dr. Sharma was quick to add that “we are fortunate to have Dr Zipkin, a national speaker in this topic, in our division! Virtually all of our hospitalists have niche areas of interest, whether it is medical education, quality and safety, billing, leadership or being a master clinician.”

She adds that the benefit of having these tools “helps individuals succeed in their careers and helps the department optimize its output. Our ongoing MedEd series works to build a local community of practice to help our faculty grow in the skills they need to succeed and to help provide our learners with the most robust educational experience.”
