GIM's 1st annual resident research award

As a way to recognize outstanding effort in general medicine research or quality improvement by a resident during training, the Division of General Internal Medicine held its very first Resident Research Award Luncheon on Monday, May 21.

"I really wanted to recognize residents that are engaged in areas of General Internal Medicine," says GIM Chief Ebony Boulware. "We came up with this award to help residents realize how important it is to be engaged in these efforts, and how much we really value their  high-quality scholarship."

The inaugural award winner was Leah Machen, MD. Machen has been heavily involved in several research projects in her three years of residency at Duke. At the award luncheon, she presented an abstract entitled "Racial Variations in Medical Care Spending Patterns Among High-Risk Primary Care Patients: Results From the Stop-DKD Study."

"I am so delighted and grateful to have been chosen for this award," says Machen. "My deepest gratitude to my mentors, Dr. Boulware, Dr. Zipkin, Dr. Edelman, and my primary research mentor, Dr. Diamantidis!"
