Stephen Greene, MD, and Julia Xu, MD, MSc-GH, have received 2021 Chair's Research Awards from the Department of Medicine.
Each year, the Chair’s Research Award funds junior investigators in the Department of Medicine who are making the transition to becoming independent scientists and planning for their first extramural funding.
Dr. Greene is an assistant professor of medicine (Cardiology), and his project is, “Use and Effectiveness of Outpatient Intravenous Diuretics for Worsening Heart Failure.”
“I’m very honored to receive this award and truly appreciate the department’s support,” said Greene. “I look forward to a productive and rewarding year.”
Dr. Xu is a prospective assistant professor of medicine (Hematology) at Duke and a senior Hematology fellow at the National Institutes of Health. Her project is “Evaluating the Effect of Voxelotor on Clinical and Biological Outcomes in Sickle Cell Disease.”
"I am extremely grateful for the department's support. The Chair's Research Award will be instrumental for my career growth, allowing me to further develop my research interest in identifying optimal treatments for anemia in sickle cell disease," said Xu.
Both projects will be funded for a one-year award of $95,000 and will begin on July 1, 2021.

Letters of intent for the 2022 Chair’s Research Award will be due in November of 2021; applications will be due in January 2022.
