Hayes selected 2019-20 VA chief resident for quality improvement and patient safety

Lara Kapp Hayes, MD, senior assistant resident in the Medicine residency training program, has been selected to serve as the Durham VA Medical Center Chief Resident for Quality and Safety (CRQS) for 2019-20.

Dr. Hayes will be part of a network of such chief residents across the country who lead quality improvement (QI) projects and receive expert training from mentors. She also will participate in a national curriculum designed to prepare a new generation of QI leaders able to help residents implement QI initiatives.

Hayes will work closely with Joel Boggan, MD, MPH, assistant professor of medicine (General Internal Medicine) and CRQS mentor; David Simel, MD, Chairman of Medicine at the Durham VA; and previous and current chiefs, including Ryan Schulteis, MD, and John Paul Shoup, MD.

"Lara has distinguished herself throughout residency and has been involved in both the Medicine Patient Safety and Quality Council and the Learning Health Systems Training Program," Dr. Boggan said. "She is dedicated to acquiring new quality improvement and patient safety skills, and I think she will be a tremendous asset to the training program."

Hayes earned her undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Utah, where she was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha. She came to Duke for internship and Internal Medicine residency.

Hayes will begin as chief resident for quality improvement and patient safety in July 2019. She will join 2019-2020 chief residents Jared Lowe, MD; Amanda Boyd, MD; and Caroline Sloan, MD. After her year as chief resident, Hayes plans to pursue a career in Hospital Medicine.
