Howard promoted to Assistant Professor

Congratulations to James Howard, MD, for promotion to Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of General Internal Medicine, effective January 1, 2022.

Dr. Howard joined Duke GIM faculty in July of 2017. For Dr. Howard’s clinical duties, he works primarily within Hospital Medicine as a nocturnist at Duke University Hospital. Within two years of starting his clinical position he was asked to lead the nocturnist group as Associate Medical Director of Night Medicine and Special Services within DUH Hospital Medicine. In this role, he leads the 12 clinical-FTE night team and helps coordinate the clinical response of the group to the current COVID pandemic. Additionally, he has served on several Duke University Hospital and Hospital Medicine committees and work groups focusing on important problems such as patient elopement, medication reconciliation, paging and communication, and standardizing documentation to capture the true complexity of our care at Duke. In this setting he is also an educator, supervising Internal Medicine residents, medical students, and physician assistant students in the diagnosis and management of acute medical conditions.
