From the Director

Another beautiful weekend! Maybe less pollen? Hard to say, but spring in the Triangle is awesome. We’ve got our online Program Directors national meeting this week so hope to bring back some good ideas from our colleagues around the country.

This week we have our first rising JAR mini-session…things are getting real here as we are in the final quarter of the year. Looking forward to thinking about and planning for all of the transitions that are happening. This is a super busy time of year so please make sure to pay attention to emails from Tia, the chiefs, and GME for any specific things you need to check the box on.

SARs, if you have any forms to be filled out for your new job, please send them to Jessica Nipper, and we will get them signed. It’s an endless stream of paperwork to get a new job at a new place so we want to make sure nothing gets lost in the shuffle.

Kudos
Kudos this week to Tim Hopper and Mike Cosiano for fantastic Cohen Conferences and to Marge DeOliviera for a great SAR talk. Also kudos to Ryan Duffy from Chelsea Perfect for helping out with a hectic night in the VA CICU and also from Chelsea to Hubie Haywood for the sustenance during the crazy night! More kudos to Emmanuella Egbonim from Aaron Hein for her astute catch of a patient need and timely referral, to Ceshae Harding from Dr. Dani Zipkin for sorting through a complex medicine reconciliation for a patient, to Nate Goodwin and Chris Wanjiku from Sith Sekar for managing a complex VA team, to Nate Goodwin from Jeffrey Lee for being an outstanding VA JAR, to Zach Lorsch, Sam Curtis, and Jordan Infield for helping out a colleague (from Bari Rosenberg), and to Sean Chen, Sukrit Jain, and Tyler Couch for a stellar time on Duke GM from Dr. Matt Labs. Kudos also to Sam Dizon, Ryan Duffy and Nathan Hirshman for being peer selected as having the top Clin Epi projects for the winter group! Thank you to Marius Chukwurah, Deborah Rose, and Ashley Thrower for representing the IM, Prelim, and Med Peds programs at the national SNMA conference last weekend.

Pubmed from the Program
This week's pubmed from the program goes to Andrew Andreae and Ann Cameron Barr for their recent publication with IM Res alum Dr. Kristen Dicks! Appearance of Meningovascular Neurosyphilis Causing an Acute Ischemic Stroke. Andreae A, Barr AC, Fulton Z, Enterline D, Dicks K.Sex Transm Dis. 2020 Nov 6. doi: 10.1097/OLQ.0000000000001330. Online ahead of print.PMID: 33165212 No abstract available.

Have a great week!

Clinic Corner: Pickett

Contributed by Jeff Clough

Pickett Road has recently undertaken initiatives to improve blood pressure control among our patient population led by our hypertension champion Priscila Tomlin. This includes targeted outreach to patients not meeting targets, protocol-driven nurse blood pressure visits, and expansive patient education. Not overlooking our own health, the Pickett Road Warriors recently won our annual staff Steps Challenge.

From the Residency Office

The Duke Narrative Medicine Meeting
The Duke Narrative Medicine group has been on pause for a while due to COVID, however we will be hosting our next meeting in one month! For those of you who are not familiar, we typically host sessions once every few months where residents can meet to share and discuss any pieces of narrative medicine that we have written. These meetings are a great opportunity to bond with your fellow residents and reflect on meaningful or difficult experiences. As a bonus, Dr. G will be attending and sharing his perspective and wisdom with us as well.

Bringing something that you have written is not requirement to participate in the meeting, however if there is a piece that you would like to share we would definitely encourage you to present it if you feel comfortable! You are welcome to share something from any medium (poem, short story, etc.), and it can be on any topic that you choose. We often will provide themes to serve as a prompt for anyone who would like to participate but is looking for a little bit of inspiration/motivation, and for this meeting we have two: "New beginnings" and "Just for fun" - again, these themes are completely optional, and feel free to share anything you have written regardless of topic.

To ensure that everyone who would like to present has time to do so (and to keep us within Duke's guidelines for in-person gatherings), we can only have a maximum of 10 participants for this session. If you are interested in participating, please send me an email to let Sean know! While we typically have food provided for us at these sessions we are unable to do so for the time being due to restrictions from Duke, however if this changes between now and the meeting we will let you know.

If you have any questions, feel free to email Timothy Hopper, Austin Wesevich, or Sean Taasan!

What: Narrative Medicine meeting - come share anything you have written!
When: Wednesday, May 5th at 6pm
Where: TBD (will be in-person at DUH)

2022-23 Chief Resident for Quality and Safety (CRQS)
This position is open to those who would be either PGY-4s or PGY-5s during that year (you can consider applying if you are either a current JAR or SAR). If you are a SAR, you should check with your fellowship program director (if applicable) to make sure they are willing to release you for the year to join us. For those interested, the next step is to contact Govind Krishnan or Joel Boggan to express interest and learn a bit more about the position. We will schedule face to face (zoom to zoom?) meetings and informational sessions so that you can learn more in the next few weeks.

Our Wellbeing
The Department of Medicine is keeping an updated list of wellbeing resources during this extraordinary time. Click here for more information.

Feeling down? Need to talk to someone? Opportunities for Wellness
All trainees at Duke have FREE access to Personal Assistance Services (PAS), which is the faculty/employee assistance program of Duke University. The staff of licensed professionals offer confidential assessment, short-term counseling, and referrals to help resolve a range of personal, work, and family problems. PAS services are available free of charge to Duke faculty and staff, and their immediate family members. An appointment to meet with a PAS counselor may be arranged by calling the PAS office at 919-416-1PAS (919-416-1727), Monday through Friday between 8:00 A.M. and 5:00 P.M. For assistance after hours, residents and fellows can call the Blood and Body Fluid Hotline (115 inside DUH, 919-684-1115 outside) for referral to behavioral health resources. Another resource is Duke Outpatient Psychiatry Referrals at (919) 684-0100 or 1-888-ASK-DUKE. https://www.hr.duke.edu/pas/
