From the Director

Countdown to the Charity Auction! Looking forward to seeing you all there on Friday night. We are really excited about the great line up of auction items and a fun night planned by Corey and Hannah! Other events coming up this week include the rising SAR retreat and making dinner at the Ronald McDonald House with the Warren Society. 

Soon thereafter, we will have the house staff vs. faculty basketball game in Cameron Indoor Stadium. Trash talk has started (thanks Matt Labriola!) as the house staff get ready to dunk on JVK, Steve Telloni, Andy Armstrong, Adam Wachter and the other faculty who are still in reasonably good shape. No RSVP necessary, just show up and be ready to play.

Kudos this week go to Eric Wei from Cece Zhang for an outstanding job on GI consults, to Sipa Yankey from Jan Dillard for compassionate, excellent patient care at the DOC, to Lindsay Shantzer from Dr. Butterly for fantastic work in renal clinic, to Shai Posner for an awesome SAR talk, and to Dan Turner for a fantastic chair’s conference.

PubMed from the Program

Lots of people presenting this week for our pubmed from the program!  Duke IM represented well at both the Society for Hospital Medicine AND the Society for General Internal Medicine meetings.

Juan Magana and Chris Pumill presented at SHM (See attached photos)! Azalea Kim ( with co-authors Jared Lowe and Manisha Bhattacharya) presented at the SGIM plenary session “A population health approach to advanced care planning.” John Paul Shoup presented “Improving Primary Care Patient Access to Rheumatology via E-Consults.” Caroline Sloan presented “Impact of Medicare Dialysis Bundled Payment Reform on Peritoneal Dialysis Program.”

Clinic Corner: Pickett Road

We have lots of great things going on at Pickett Road. We are gearing up for earth day, April 22, 2018. We are hoping to plant the tomatoes, peppers and annuals on Saturday, April 21, at 10 a.m. In previous years, patients really appreciated being able to pick vegetables from our garden! Snacks and drinks provided; all are welcome. Other plans are for May 4, the day before Cinco de Mayo with a Mexican-themed potluck feast. We hope to go out as a group to a Durham Bulls game to celebrate and spend time together in the next 2-3 months. Other ideas are to increase breast cancer and osteopenia/osteoporosis/screen for bone disease with more posters in the patient rooms. We are hoping to recognize our veterans as well at the clinic at check in with American Flag stickers and to thank them for their service. Yoga night is still planed for end of the month. We are working hard to on our forms process, as well. Last but not least, we are excited for SAR dinner at University Tower in June for our graduating SARS.

Annual Charity Auction - Tickets Are On Sale!
Ticket sales for the Annual Internal Medicine Residency Charity Auction start TODAY, April 2. Stop by the MedRes Office any time to purchase a ticket. We will also be selling them at Grand Rounds starting this week. Tickets are $25. Credit card, cash, and check are all options.

Resident Wellness Initiative Grants
Resident Wellness Initiative Grants for resident-led, innovative projects are dedicated to promote the well-being of our residents, which is of utmost importance to our Program. 

The proposed initiatives may be designed to promote resident physician wellness by building skills to handle the challenges and the pace of the current healthcare environment, while continuing to provide quality care to patients.

  1. Two awards each $2,500/project will be funded
  2. Funding start date is July 1, 2018
  3. Each proposal must be led by one or more SARs (current JARs) during the 2018-2019 academic year. Extension of funding may be requested next year beyond June 30, 2019
  4. Teamwork is encouraged to include rising JARs and incoming interns. Multiple SARs may lead one project
  5. Faculty sponsor/advisor may be recruited but not required
  6. Additional funding for a larger award may be available depending on the level of interest and budgets of the project(s). The award committee will review and make a decision on each proposal.
  7. The 2-page proposals are due on June 1, 2018 for review by an award selection committee
  8. Applications forms are attached.

Califf Medicine Resident Research Award
The annual Califf Medicine Resident Research Award competition abstracts are due on April 30, 2018. Awards presentation will take place on May 18, 2018 between 7-9 a.m. in Searle Center Lecture Hall.

Abstracts (300 word) and supporting mentor's letter are due on April 30, 2018. All abstracts submitted for competition will also be presented as posters. The top 3 abstracts will be selected by a faculty committee for the Califf Research Awards and these research projects will be presented as 15 minute talks 8-9 a.m.

Two best poster awards will be selected (Research poster and QI poster) by the Chief Residents during the poster viewing session prior to Grand Rounds.

We invite all of you to present your scholarly activities as posters (we can send you poster templates):

  1. Basic, clinical, medical education, and translational research projects
  2. Case studies / vignettes including ACP posters from 2018
  3. QI projects
  4. Please plan on presenting your posters posters that you have presented previously at a national scientific meeting

To discuss any issues related to the application process or once you have decided to submit an abstract, please e-mail murat.arcasoy@duke.edu to declare your intention to submit, your research mentor's name and the title of your poster.  Please contact the MedRes office staff (Ms. Tia Williams) for assistance with the poster preparation process.

 
 

Feeling down? Need to talk to someone? Opportunities for Wellness
All trainees at Duke have FREE access to Personal Assistance Services (PAS), which is the faculty/employee assistance program of Duke University. The staff of licensed professionals offer confidential assessment, short-term counseling, and referrals to help resolve a range of personal, work, and family problems. PAS services are available free of charge to Duke faculty and staff, and their immediate family members. An appointment to meet with a PAS counselor may be arranged by calling the PAS office at 919-416-1PAS (919-416-1727), Monday through Friday between 8:00 A.M. and 5:00 P.M. For assistance after hours, residents and fellows can call the Blood and Body Fluid Hotline (115 inside DUH, 919-684-1115 outside) for referral to behavioral health resources. Another resource is Duke Outpatient Psychiatry Referrals at (919) 684-0100 or 1-888-ASK-DUKE. https://www.hr.duke.edu/pas/
