And just like that it is the last week of April! Thanks chiefs for kicking off our COVID-safe rising JAR and rising SAR mini-retreats, and special thanks to Sam Dizon and Grace Lee for peer debriefing teaching. More mini-retreats to follow for small groups.
Please don’t forget to update vaccination status in VaxTrax, if you have not already done so. Also, please keep up with ACLS (new! No more BLS needed) – see emails from Tia, if you need to get your status updated before the April 30 deadline.
Kudos this week to Sebastian Estrada for an excellent Cohen Conference, to Hayley Cunningham for helping out a family while on NF (from me), to Sean Chen from Hope Glowacki for helping out in a busy VA CICU, to Callie Berkowitz for an awesome SAR talk, also to Callie Berkowitz and Daniel Bernstein for their DRH GOOD CATCH award for fixing a patient safety issue, to Brandon Durant from Dani Zipkin for a great week of DOC lead, to Mai Bedair from Tim Hopper for going the extra mile and getting a patient transferred from the VA to Duke for care, and to Caitlin Driscoll from Hayley Cunningham for ensuring outstanding patient care on Duke GM (seconded by Matt Abbott)!

Duke Cardio-Oncology Conference Rounds Invitation
This event functions similarly to a tumor board and is well attended. Cardio-Oncology impacts all disease sites and we are encouraging clinicians in other specialties to join. Details about monthly rounds is below:
Duke Cardio Oncology Rounds are held every third Wednesday at noon:

1 CME offered for attendance

2-3 cases presented during each monthly rounds

Presentations are led by two specialists, ex: cardiology and hematology discuss shared cases related to cardio-oncology

Introduction – 2-3 minutes, Case description – 15 minutes, Literature review or discussion – 10 minutes, Follow up questions – 5 minutes

Duke Narrative Medicine Group Meeting
The Duke Narrative Medicine group has been on pause for a while due to COVID, however they will be hosting their next meeting in one month! For those of you who are not familiar, we typically host sessions once every few months where residents can meet to share and discuss any pieces of narrative medicine that we have written. These meetings are a great opportunity to bond with your fellow residents and reflect on meaningful or difficult experiences. As a bonus, Dr. G will be attending and sharing his perspective and wisdom with us as well.
Bringing something that you have written is not requirement to participate in the meeting, however if there is a piece that you would like to share we would definitely encourage you to present it if you feel comfortable! You are welcome to share something from any medium (poem, short story, etc.), and it can be on any topic that you choose. We often will provide themes to serve as a prompt for anyone who would like to participate but is looking for a little bit of inspiration/motivation, and for this meeting we have two: "New beginnings" and "Just for fun" - again, these themes are completely optional, and feel free to share anything you have written regardless of topic.
To ensure that everyone who would like to present has time to do so (and to keep us within Duke's guidelines for in-person gatherings), we can only have a maximum of 10 participants for this session. If you are interested in participating, please send me an email to let me know! While we typically have food provided for us at these sessions we are unable to do so for the time being due to restrictions from Duke, however if this changes between now and the meeting we will let you know.

Mandarin-Speaking Residents needed for Health Fair
APAMSA, the Asian Pacific American Medical Student Association, at the Duke School of Medicine is looking for medical residents who speak Mandarin Chinese to volunteer with our Virtual Chinese Health Fair that is occurring Thursday May 27th from 3-5 pm virtually over Zoom. The Health Fair targets the local Chinese population in Durham and is being advertised via various community leaders.
The fair will start with multiple video lectures on relevant health issues in the Asian community (i.e. depression, COVID, diabetes) and will be followed by short one-on-one consults with doctors. Your responsibility would be to engage in these short 5 to 10 minute discussions with an individual or family to answer any questions about the lecture content or in general. You would be supervised under Dr. Amy Lee (Med-Peds). For more information please reach out to Nicky Chung nicky.chung@duke.edu.

The staff of licensed professionals offer confidential assessment, short-term counseling, and referrals to help resolve a range of personal, work, and family problems. PAS services are available free of charge to Duke faculty and staff, and their immediate family members.
