From the Director

Hi Everyone!

Hope everyone had a good weekend! Nice to see that Sunday afternoon practices continue! We are gearing up for a number of social events in August, so please pay attention to the calendar! Thanks to everyone who is keeping the interview calendar updated as well.  I hear that the first interview skills session with Dr. Kat Pollak went very well – please keep an eye on the calendar for the next session if you were unable to make it.

Congratulations to our intern residency council reps: Matthew Carlisle, Lauren Donnangelo, Keva Garg, Joseph Lerman and Martin Weiss.  Much appreciated to everyone who also volunteered to be part of the various residency council subcommitees.

Kudos

Kudos and congrats this week to Annie Reihman for her outstanding SAR talk, and to Landon Brown for a fantastic chair’s conference.  Other kudos go out to Sarah Nouri and Landon Brown from Daphne Xiao for being great teachers and team leaders on Duke Gen Med, to Robert Diep for compassionate care on gen med (as told to Jason Zhu from a patient’s family member), and to Sipa Yankey from Melodi Whitley and the CCU interns for teaching a lot and helping with procedures in the CCU. Thank you to Joel Boggan and the Kerby Society for hosting a fun night at the Durham Bulls game.

PubMed from the Program

This week’s pubmed from the program goes to Lauren Sharan for her abstract that was accepted for an oral presentation at AHA “The Impact of Patent Foramen Ovale in Patients with Pulmonary Hypertension” with co-authors as med peds graduate Jordan Awerbach, and mentors Tom Bashore and Richard Krasuski.

Have a great week!

Clinic Corner: Pickett Road

Contributed by Sharon Rubin

We welcome Dr. Nastassia Shaw who comes from University of Connecticut. She was an ambulatory chief there and ready to start at Pickett Road to see patients and in time precept with residents. We are so excited for her to join us. As a clinic we are working on refining our referrals work flow so that our patients get their mammograms, colonoscopies, radiology and specialty referral in a more timely manner. We are also working on refills starting on the weekend to keep up with the demand.  We are assembling a team to go the Heart Walk in October. We are also preparing to restart extended hours in September, starting 7 a.m. and then later in December extending the hours to 6 p.m.

How much does that antibiotic cost?

Check out https://www.customid.org/antimicrobial/antimicrobial-cost-chart!

The ASET pharmacists (Christina Sarubbi and Rebekah Wrenn) have worked with the Center for Medication Policy to put together a handy chart that compares the costs of antimicrobials at DUH. Please use this as you’re considering clinical choices, doing QI projects, or if you’re just curious! These are inpatient direct pharmacy costs per day for Duke University based on common dosing schedules. They will be updated every 6 months by the Center for Medication Policy and maintained on CustomID. If there is a large change in cost, it will be updated more frequently.
