Hi Everyone!
It’s a busy week this week! Looks like the eclipse will be passing through around 2:45 this afternoon (partial at 1:16, complete by 4:05 according to my sources https://www.timeanddate.com/eclipse/in/usa/durham). We don’t have eclipse glasses for everyone but we do have cookies! So come on by and experience some science history, with cookies, near the med res library if you can.
Football practice continues on Sunday afternoons; thank you to Tara Holder for organizing this past week. We also have our HANG OUT WITH YOUR COACH HAPPY HOUR on Thursday at West End Billiards, and the SUMMER MED RES PARTY at the home of Dr. Rogers on Friday night. It is ok to come to the coach happy hour even if your coach is unable to make it, so we hope to see you there. Thirsty Thursdays with ResCo will continue at that same location after the Coach Happy Hour this week!
Kudos
Kudos this week to Liz Gilbert for her great SAR talk, and to Irena Tan, with technical assistance from Kent Feng, for an awesome chair’s conference complete with new format this past Friday. Thank you also to the 29 people who responded to the informal feedback – the opinion was overwhelmingly positive for the format and for having the extra consultants present. Other kudos to Keva Garg and JD Ike from Neuro Attending Shreyansh Shah for outstanding work, to Dr. David Leverenz for his outstanding care, to Matt Labriola and Lara Kapp for superb care to a very sick patient at the DOC from Dinushika Mohottige, and to Katie Charles, Akash Goyal, Divya Natesan and Hannah Dzmictrowicz for awesome work on VA Gen Med from Brian Schneider.
Congratulations to Lauren Sharan and Ben Ranard on their wedding this past weekend and to John Paul Shoup and family on the birth of Dominic John! A great weekend for the #dukefamily!

Clinic Corner: PRIME

We are proud to say that PRIME is doing a great job on our HEDIS reminders – don’t let up, keep getting them all done at each visit! These aren’t just about satisfying metrics but are about markers of providing quality care. Clinic-wide data will be posted in the staff hall area and you’ll soon receive a paper copy of how each of you are managing your own panel’s measures.
If you haven’t met your PRIME Family Medicine resident colleague Alexa Mieses, it is because she is off in NYC doing a one-month internship at ABC News doing health reporting. Soon Phil Liu will be returning from China where he is doing a rotation. Not to mention we are thrilled to have our newbies on board!
Be aware that soon you’ll have to enter a provisional diagnosis for EVERY consult per national directive. Don’t forget there’s a top 100 list of primary care diagnoses on the bulletin board in your exam room if you get stuck and can’t find one. Also you can use ICD10data.com or even Siri for help if you can’t find a diagnosis code.

The ASET pharmacists (Christina Sarubbi and Rebekah Wrenn) have worked with the Center for Medication Policy to put together a handy chart that compares the costs of antimicrobials at DUH. Please use this as you’re considering clinical choices, doing QI projects, or if you’re just curious! These are inpatient direct pharmacy costs per day for Duke University based on common dosing schedules. They will be updated every 6 months by the Center for Medication Policy and maintained on CustomID. If there is a large change in cost, it will be updated more frequently.

All trainees at Duke have FREE access to Personal Assistance Services (PAS), which is the faculty/employee assistance program of Duke University. The staff of licensed professionals offer confidential assessment, short-term counseling, and referrals to help resolve a range of personal, work, and family problems. PAS services are available free of charge to Duke faculty and staff, and their immediate family members. An appointment to meet with a PAS counselor may be arranged by calling the PAS office at 919-416-1PAS (919-416-1727), Monday through Friday between 8:00 A.M. and 5:00 P.M. For assistance after hours, residents and fellows can call the Blood and Body Fluid Hotline (115 inside DUH, 919-684-1115 outside) for referral to behavioral health resources.
