Internal Medicine Residency News, Aug. 28, 2017

From the Director

Hi Everyone!

A huge thank you to Dr. Joseph Rogers and his amazing wife Katina for hosting a fun summer party for the residency program. We all had a great time and many thanks also to Erin Payne and Kerri Shore for their excellent planning and work to make it happen! We also enjoyed a great coach-coachee happy hour on Thursday- glad to see so many of you there!

Many of you may have friends or family affected by the flooding in Texas. Via social media, I've heard our many members of the Duke family who are in Houston are safe. We will be working to find a way to help our colleagues there, so stay tuned for that this week.

Don't forget to come out and support VA CRQS Sam Lindner and future VA CRQS JP Shoup this Friday for our first M and M QI Grand Rounds of the year!

Introducing the Ambulatory Care Leadership Track (ACLT)
Attention Interns!

Are you thinking of going into a subspecialty or general medicine, where you will have an ambulatory practice? Do you want to learn how to have an impact on health policy and use your voice to improve patient care? Please consider being a part of the ACLT. Founded in 2012, It is an elective track for second and third year internal medicine residents which serves as a foundation for careers as leaders in academic medicine subspecialties, primary care, research, or education. Residents come together during twelve ambulatory weeks per year of ambulatory clinical time and weekly academic seminars, including:

  • Advocacy and health policy seminars given by faculty in government relations and health policy throughout the year, with an advocacy trip in the spring to either Washington DC or Raleigh, NC, alternating years. Residents create a platform based on issues they wish to address as a group and meet directly with lawmakers at the state and national level to present their views.
  • Seminars in population health and practice management
  • Curricula in teaching and opportunities to teach as a senior resident
  • Each block also includes General Internal Medicine Journal Club, presented by residents with support from EBM teaching faculty.
  • Access to all the clinical opportunities during ambulatory blocks, including: sports medicine, women’s health, ENT, ophthalmology, dermatology, palliative care, integrative medicine, pain medicine, obesity medicine, gen med, as well as all medicine subspecialties

The ACLT has evolved significantly since its inception, in response to residents’ feedback. This is a wonderful opportunity to realize your personal impact on the worlds of clinical medicine, education, leadership, and health policy.

We will ask for a one page application closer to to December, stay tuned! If you have questions, please email Dr. Zipkin

Current ACLT residents:

How much does that antibiotic cost?

Check out https://www.customid.org/antimicrobial/antimicrobial-cost-chart!

The ASET pharmacists (Christina Sarubbi and Rebekah Wrenn) have worked with the Center for Medication Policy to put together a handy chart that compares the costs of antimicrobials at DUH. Please use this as you’re considering clinical choices, doing QI projects, or if you’re just curious! These are inpatient direct pharmacy costs per day for Duke University based on common dosing schedules. They will be updated every 6 months by the Center for Medication Policy and maintained on CustomID. If there is a large change in cost, it will be updated more frequently.
