Internal Medicine Residency News, Dec. 20th 2021

From the Director

Hello Fam!

It is the last MED RES NEWS of 2021.  Thank you to the chiefs for the final HYPE Friday of our Holiday Hype season and to our Tacos champ Emory Buck and Thanks Rx champ Shivy Chandramouli!  If you are around, please consider heading over to the GME Blood Drive tomorrow.  Also send a big congrats to our amazing IM and Med Peds APDs, Drs. Jenny Van Kirk and Colby Feeney who each won a Division of General Internal Medicine 2021 Award (Educational Excellence and Quality Improvement, respectively!).   Also huge holiday thanks to Sandra Loriaux and the ResCo team for the IM-Med Peds Residency Holiday Food Drive and to Ashley Thrower and the Minority Housestaff Council for sponsoring women and children at the Durham Rescue Mission’s Good Samaritan Inn.  Finally, the Department of Medicine is helping out the patients at the DOC through the DOC Patient Fund.  SO many great opportunities to make this holiday season a little brighter.

Patagonias have arrived.  Thanks so much Lynsey for organizing this!!

Kudos

Kudos as well this week to Gracie Ernstberger from Dr Eric Pollak for awesome work on Duke Gen Med, to VA CCU residents Casey Howe, Kelly Flynn, and Brittany Chapman for taking charge of the service and did an incredible job with management and disposition from Dr Sunil Rao, to Nijat Aliyev from Grace Lee for crushing DRH nights, to Mary Jo Obeid and Lauren Pinion from Nicole DUssault for being the best Gen Med team, and to Zach Lorsch from Emory Buck for above and beyond care of a patient at the VA.

Congrats to Duke Fam alum Katie Pollard and Alex Sullivan on their wedding this weekend!

And super cheesey kudos from me to ALL OF THE DUKE FAM for making these past six months the best they could possibly be – taking care of your patients as well as looking out for each other along the way.

Pubmed from the Program

This week’s pubmed from the program goes to Andrew Andreae and Ann Cameron Barr for their publication

Feeling down? Need to talk to someone? Opportunities for Wellness
All trainees at Duke have FREE access to Personal Assistance Services (PAS), which is the faculty/employee assistance program of Duke University. The staff of licensed professionals offer confidential assessment, short-term counseling, and referrals to help resolve a range of personal, work, and family problems. PAS services are available free of charge to Duke faculty and staff, and their immediate family members. An appointment to meet with a PAS counselor may be arranged by calling the PAS office at 919-416-1PAS (919-416-1727), Monday through Friday between 8:00 A.M. and 5:00 P.M. For assistance after hours, residents and fellows can call the Blood and Body Fluid Hotline (115 inside DUH, 919-684-1115 outside) for referral to behavioral health resources. Another resource is Duke Outpatient Psychiatry Referrals at (919) 684-0100 or 1-888-ASK-DUKE. https://www.hr.duke.edu/pas/
