From the Director
Happy December! We have some great “MO-vember” pictures, with many thanks to our amazing residents for raising more than $700 for men’s health programs. OMG, now shave those amazing and ridiculous mustaches!
What a big week – congratulations again to our fantastic SAR class on their fellowship match, and to those who are pursuing what our parents affectionately refer to as “real jobs” following residency training. We could not be more proud of each and every one of you. JARs, don’t worry. We have an entire program of fellowship/job prep ready to get rolling just after the new year.
Our ACLT group met with Secretary of HHS Dr. Mandy Cohen this week to learn about advocacy. Excitingly, the ACLT is now called the ADVOCACY CLINICAL LEADERSHIP TRACK. What a great opportunity for us to get involved with a core function of physicians – advocating at a system level for better care for our patients. Way to go Dani, Alex and the ACLT team!
Many many thanks to Chris Hostler, Steve Pappas, Tom Lefevre, Brian Hayes and Bruce Capehart for sharing their stories about caring for Veterans at noon conference. We appreciate your service now and always.
Kudos
Kudos this week go to Allen Witt, Grace Lee, and Linh Nguyen (Family Med), our CAD nights interns from cards fellow Kevin Friede for hard work on a really busy night, to David Elliott and Kyle Guerink from Lauren Donnangelo for being amazing and supportive teammates caring for patients at the VA, from Sonali Bracken to Jordan Gales and Michael Burt for taking outstanding care of a patient with metastatic cancer who is transitioning to hospice care and allowing him "to keep his dignity." Per Sonali, the patient asked me to specifically reach out to them both and tell him that he is so appreciative of everything they have done for him and that "he loves those guys." Also from Sonali to Sara Coles for being a VA GM Rockstar, and from Anmol Singh to Callie Berkowitz for managing the practice partnership inbox with promptness, accuracy, grace and outstanding work ethic and to Alie Mara for helping out when Anmol ran behind in clinic. Kudos as well to Anmol for her phenomenal chair’s conference!
PubMed from the Program
This week’s pubmed from the program goes to Sean Chen for his paper Chen, ST, and Melloni, C. "Atrial Fibrillation in Cancer Patients: Recognizing Gaps in Care." Journal of the American College of Cardiology 72, no. 16 (October 2018): 1923-1925.
Holy cow, it’s time to register for boards. SARs, we will send out the information but please remember to register before the prices go up.
Have a great week!
Aimee

Advocacy in Clinical Leadership Track
We are pleased to share an opportunity to participate in the Advocacy in Clinical Leadership Track (ACLT). The ACLT does not change the duration or nature of your training - it lines up ambulatory time for 12 weeks out of the year for JARs and SARs and uses one half day per week to share a curriculum in health policy and advocacy, medical education, and leadership skills.
Residents will form their own advocacy platform and deliver it in person with legislators at both the state and national levels in alternate years. Past projects selected by the residents have addressed opioid policy, drug pricing, and food insecurity, as examples. ACLT residents will also have opportunities to teach morning report and academic half day sessions with observation and feedback.
In addition, ACLT residents lead GIM Journal Club while they are on block. Please note that the ACLT may conflict with some +2 schedule requests and other opportunities in the residency program. Feel free to contact Daniella Zipkin and the chiefs with specific questions. Deadline to apply is Jan. 4, 2019.
