Internal Medicine Residency News, December 19, 2016

From the Director

It’s the last MED RES NEWS of 2016!  How in the world did that happen?!?  Thanks in advance to you all for some amazing work in the first half of this academic year.  We still have conferences and reports Mon-Wed and Thursday starts the holiday schedule.  If you are working on Christmas, please be sure to join Dr. Kussin and me for Chinese food in the Med Res library on Sunday!  Dr. Klotman also sends in Christmas dinner for those working on Christmas Eve, so THANK YOU, and come join your colleagues for some food and good cheer on the 24th, as well.  Don’t worry, New Years folks, we will have something for you as well to ring in 2017. The DOC holiday party was a big success! Lots of karaoke talent to be had and good times with residents, faculty and staff.  Thanks to Dr. Greenblatt for hosting! Congratulations to our rising SARs who were selected for the 2017-18 Hubert Yeargan Global Health Institute Short Term Global Health Rotation! Full announcement to follow. Be on the lookout for your schedule request forms, the Clin Epi application! This week we will also send out an anonymous form to nominate up to three colleagues for consideration for an ACR position in 2017.  Instructions will come with the email.

Kudos

Kudos this week go to (belated) Bryan Kraft for great MICU teaching, to Nathan Moulton from Dr. Granger and the CCU for outstanding patient care, to Leah Machen from Sarah Nouri for being an amazingly helpful call buddy, to Tessa Genders from Myles Nickolich for above and beyond patient care – working with pharmacy and insurance to get a patient what they needed, to David Sterken and Mike Graham from Lindsay Boole for their hard work in the MICU (during maestro downtime!), to Jacob Kaufman for his afternoon report presentation for the applicants and let’s raise our hands in the air (like we just don’t care) to Elieth Martinez for her awesome chair’s conference (if you were there, you get the joke – nicely done Elieth!).

Thank you to our MY TAKE residents Claire Smith, Meg Steiner, Bill McManigleMike Murn, Manisha Bhattacharya, Kavisha Singh.  Also thank you to our tour guides Ashley Spann, Juan Sanchez, Dan Maselli, Div Patel, Kahli Zietlow, Kent Feng, Dave Kopin, Kavisha Singh, Mike Murn, Nick Shelburne, and Chris Pumill. Thanks to the JARs for their holiday thank you's and treats for the office. Much appreciated!

PubMed from the Program

This week’s pubmed from the program goes to Taylor Bazemore for his recent article in the Am J Cardiology! Identification of Factors Associated With Improved Survival After Renal Artery Stenting. Meredith D, Bazemore TC, Shah A, Dilley J, Stouffer GA. Am J Cardiol. 2016 Nov 16. pii: S0002-9149(16)31832-X. doi: 10.1016/j.amjcard.2016.10.054.

Have a great week, and a very happy and healthy holiday with your #dukefamily and all your loved ones!

Clinic Corner: PRIME Clinic

Contributed by Sonal Patel, MD

We welcome the return of Kelly Ground from her maternity leave and are glad baby Owen is doing great!

We are looking forward to a great 2017 in PRIME clinic. Based on input we received from residents (during both Town Hall and PRIME Steering Committee), we have decided to trial decreasing the number of patients the SARs will see in the afternoons, and we are also experimenting for everyone with inserting an unbooked 30 minutes in the middle of your clinic starting in January (except for Friday mornings).  We toyed around with increasing appointment times but due to logistical reasons we couldn't do this. The intention is that you will be able to stay more caught up as your afternoon progresses and also that you may have more breathing space for education as your afternoon progresses. The net effect for everyone should not be that you will finish later in the day but that it will be easier to stay on time.

We have a huge influx of new patients entering PRIME from having been seen in the new patient clinic.  The primary burden of this load should pass in the next two months; please be patient during this process.  You can speak to Leigh Wynkoop if you would like to have a new patient reassigned to your panel if you are seeing someone off-team.

Remember to enter your RTC orders using a specific date based on your color-coded green sheets (e.g. RTC 2/17/17 with Dr. Jones).  This is to improve your continuity - better for the patient AND you! Your investing the extra 30 seconds to be specific on this order can yield a big payoff in the future for all parties.  You've asked for improved continuity, so do your part!

Remember, if you're on Team 1 (Teams A-E), your team's assigned MSA is Medenna Carr. Team 2 (Teams MPA, MPB, J, K, and L), your MSA is Paul Granchukoff.  Team 3 (Teams F-I and FP), your MSA is Tyson Williams.   We have two brand new MSAs up front, Destiny Gilchrist and Latasha Alston.

Tara Holder and Leigh Wynkoop took a few minutes to serenade Veterans and their families and staff in the lobby with Christmas tunes.  PRIME music!

Happy holidays to all and we look forward to seeing everyone in 2017!

Humanism in Medicine Lecture Series

Haider Warraich, MD, cardiovascular diseases fellow, will give a presentation, "Searching for Beauty at the End of Life," based on his upcoming book, "Modern Death," on Jan. 17 at noon in Duke North 2002. From Dr. Warraich: "I think many of us are affected by death in the hospital in a very powerful way, but frequently with negative emotional consequences. In this talk, I hope to convey how we can find meaning and beauty in dying and change a narrative in which death is the enemy." Learn more.
