From the Director

Happy December! Sorry to all who had to start shaving again … Busy times right now. Schedule request forms will be coming out in a few weeks, it is fellowship match on Wednesday, and we have the holiday party on Saturday … We took a brief hiatus from interviews last week, and are back in full swing through to the holiday break … ABIM exam registration is opening up for our SARS—please pay attention to the dates so that you don’t have to pay a late fee!  … And we have the ACGME CLER visit to Duke this week; thanks in advance to all those who are helping out with this routine institutional visit.

Kudos

Kudos this week to Ashley Spann from Josh Broder for being a great physician in the ED … to Jenny Van Kirk, Alyson McGhan, Aubrey Jolly Graham, Erin McGuire and Juan Magana from Matt Labriola for stepping in and helping out this weekend  … and to Jacob Kaufman for doing chair’s conference on Friday!

Clinic schedules are out for the “+2 weeks” in blocks 9 through 12. A huge thank you to our office, to the chiefs, and to the clinic staff for this HUGE accomplishment. Now you can take a look and see when you might have an upcoming clinic to facilitate bringing back YOUR patient to see YOU at a future appointment. We really appreciate everyone’s effort for making this happen.

PubMed from the Program

This week’s highlight goes to Lauren Collins for her upcoming presentation at CROI in Seattle!

Hi DOC Residents! So great to see you at the DOC! And great to see the interns get more and more comfortable here!

Redesign 2-Intensive Primary Care: Our redesign work continues with HI DOC, where we will provide more onsite medical treatment … trying to keep patients with us, and not at the ED! Official start date Jan 1, 2017.

Women's Health: We are continuing to grow new ideas and programs, and working with MFM .. if any of you are interested in Nexplanon training--super easy to insert, but does need specialized training, I am working with Peds and Fam Med for a session in January, early evening.. just let me know!

Jan Dillard and Robert Diep

From Jan Dillard: Referrals to Joy and Ashley should be for intervention regarding a specific behavior that needs to change.  That may be related to a physical health issue (e.g. healthy diet, take insulin as prescribed, monitor BP daily, etc.), or it may be related to a behavioral health issue (e.g. relaxation breathing, meditation, increasing activity, etc.).  If Joy and Ashley are not available for brief interventions, I can also help.  Referrals for longer term psychotherapy (eg. CBT), psychosocial assessment, or concrete needs should come to me.  If you aren't sure, let one of us know, and we'll help you sort it out!

And, look for new flyer (with a nut on it!) , as well as reorganized bulletin boards in precepting room flyer on PAP (patient assist program,  meds funded thru pharma) vs NC Med Assist. Do you know when to use one program vs. another for your pt?
