From the Director

It’s nearing the end of Fun-bruary. Thank you to our Stead leaders for hosting a really fun night at Pour Taproom on Monday – great resident AND faculty turnout. This week is Voices in Medicine on Wednesday night in Trent Semans and then the “Thank You but this is not Goodbye” party for Erin on Thursday night (thank you to Keva Garg, Joe Lerman, Nancy Yang, Matt Carlisle and Lauren Donnangelo for organizing).

We had a great turnout at the Wednesday fellowship intro meeting. Looking forward to seeing those who could not make it at the meeting tonight.  If your schedule doesn’t permit you to make either, I will be happy to do the overview during our 1:1 meeting (see the signups from Kerri).

Kudos

Kudos this week go to Johnny Komisar for fantastic care of his patients and his practice partnership's at the DOC from Matt Labriola, to Tanya Aylward from Dr. Bowlby, Dr. Hughes and many other DRH physicians for amazing care of patients, to Gen Med 3 (Sipa Yankey, Nick Kamp and Baha Al-jarani) from Dr. Poonam Sharma – she has had a record number of patients compliment their amazing care, to Hysem Eldik and Maryann Osayande from Tara Holder and Alex Sullivan for being extremely helpful during the care of a very ill patient at the VA (and also kudos to Alex and Tara for quickly responding to the patient’s needs).  Kudos to Manisha Bhattacharya for being a great VA dayfloat, to Anthony Horton for great care as the VA Gen Med Intern from Brittany Gatta and to Monty Natour and Lauren Donnangelo for above and beyond patient care on Duke Gen Med from Ashley Naughton. And to Shaki Salvador for excellent leadership and teaching at the VA from Kyle Geurink. Also kudos to Ankeet Bhatt for his SAR talk – nicely done!

BIG THANKS to our awesome ACRS Jared Lowe, Kevin Smith and Meg Steiner for your great work these past few months!

This week’s pubmed from the program goes to our ACP presenters Mike Grant, Katie Wood, Toi Spates, Talisha Ramchal, Matt Tucker, Lara Hayes, Alex Sullivan, Chidi Egwim, Todd Brophy, Chris PUmill, Kelly Ground, JP Shoup, Jared Lowe, and Megan Dupuis, with Toi Spates and Talisha Ramchal winning 3rd place in the clinical vignette competition.  And special congrats to our awesome Doctor’s Dilemma team of Nate Moulton, Rebecca Ruf and Nick Shelburne as well as Chief Dinushika Mohottige presenting as our Chief Resident representative.

GIM Resident Research Award
The Division of General Internal Medicine is pleased to announce the first annual GIM Resident Research Award! Please see details below. Applications will be accepted through March 30, 2018.

Eligibility:
Internal Medicine residents (categorical, medicine-pediatrics, medicine-psychiatry)
Research that was initiated during tenure as a resident

Submission Categories:
One award will be given annually. Submissions can be either:
Clinical Research
Quality Improvement

Submissions should be relevant to primary care, general internal medicine, or hospital medicine. Areas of focus can include patient-centered interventions, disparity populations, population management, systems evaluation or re-design, or health care policy.

Submissions should be under 800 words and should include:

  • Name of primary investigator and co-investigators
  • Name of other faculty mentors involved in the project
  • Description of project including objectives, population, methods/intervention, and outcomes if available.
  • Discussion of lessons learned, one paragraph
  • Attach copies or links to any published abstracts or manuscripts related to the work

Please submit your materials to Robin Byrd, robin.byrd@duke.edu, via email attachment by March 30, 2018. Blinded committee review will take place in April.

The top selected projects will be invited to present their work at a DGIM research meeting in May 2018, to be announced. The winner of the top rated project will receive a $500 honorarium. We look forward to seeing your submissions!

Faculty-Resident Research Grant

The applications are due on April 8, 2018 for a funding start date on July 1, 2018.

For JARs, the funding end date is June 30, 2019. For Interns, the funding end date is June 30, 2020.

Attached please find the application forms, instructions, and sample NIH format biosketch (the old NIH Bioskecth format forms are acceptable for your CV)

Please submit your application as a single word or pdf file that includes your mentor’s NIH Biosketch (the new versus old NIH Biosketch format is optional for your mentor).

Please email a pdf file of the signed mentor's support letter with your application by April 9, either as part of the entire application or separately.

Each proposal must have a Human subjects section that describes the protections of the patients and patient data, describe the consent procedure if applicable, status of IRB protocol (to be submitted, already submitted or already approved, as appropriate) etc. This section is required whether to not your project is a retrospective or prospective study, whether patient identifiers are exposed (or not) during data collection/analysis, whether consent is to be obtained or there is a waiver for consent. Please see attached example language that you can adapt to your own specific protocol after discussing with your research mentor.

The next opportunity to apply for a research grant will be in September 2018. Please also find attached scholarship opportunity calendar for this academic year 2017-2018

All trainees at Duke have FREE access to Personal Assistance Services (PAS), which is the faculty/employee assistance program of Duke University. The staff of licensed professionals offer confidential assessment, short-term counseling, and referrals to help resolve a range of personal, work, and family problems. PAS services are available free of charge to Duke faculty and staff, and their immediate family members.
