From the Director

Happy Funbruary! Keep your eyes out for messages from Erin regarding activities and events that will take place throughout the month! Tonight is Ponysaurus and of course Thursday is the big Duke-UNC game!  Hope to see y’all there!

Kudos

Double kudos this week go to Shaki Salvador – from Kyle Guerink for being an awesome VA JAR and from Dave D’alessio for being amazing to work with at Lincoln Community Health Center! Also kudos to Ashley Spann for an outstanding DIHI presentation! Many thanks to all who supported our 2nd Look Weekend – we really appreciate your hard work in representing Duke and recruiting amazing “future Duke residents.”  Also kudos to Bonike Olurontoba and Camille Frazier-Mills for being keynote speakers.

PubMed from the Program

This week’s pubmed from the program goes to Sipa Yankey for his abstract acceptance to the ACC 67th Annual Scientific Session “Aortic Valve Replacement and Outcomes in Patients with Severe AS: Is it Black or White?”

Happy FUN-bruary!

Accessing the CSRS
A tip from a PRIME resident on access the CSRS, aka the opioid state data base.

How to get a PW and use it, very important with the new laws and in today’s climate.

Today I emailed NC CSRS and got in touch with Kristen Weisberg (email address Kristen.weisberg@dhhs.nc.gov), who provided alternate instructions that helped. She said it would be okay if anyone is still having trouble to reach out to her about access, so wanted to pass her contact info along in case there are still residents having trouble getting registered.

Patient Food Distribution
We are lucky enough to have Med Students providing fresh food for our patients..

The next distribution date is February 23 from 3-5:30. The dates for the rest of the year are March 23, April 27, May 25, June 22, July 27 and Aug. 24.

If a patient is identified as food insecure, they can be referred to Jan to be added to our Epic patient list. We recommend using the Hunger Vital Sign to screen patients for food insecurity. An answer of yes to either or both of the two questions would be a positive screen:

  1. Within the past 12 months we worried whether our food would run out before we got money to buy more.
  2. Within the past 12 months the food we bought just didn’t last and we didn’t have money to get more.

We want to help any patient with food insecurity.

'Quit on the Go' Trial
“The ‘Quit on the Go’ Trial will be expanding its recruitment efforts in the Duke Outpatient Clinic with the introduction of a new research-specific Maestro Care Best Practice Alert (BPA). ‘Quit on the Go’ is a Duke research study evaluating smoking cessation apps that help those with serious mental illness quit smoking. The ‘Quit on the Go’ research team pre-screens the medical records to identify potentially eligible patients who have upcoming appointments at the clinic.

This BPA will be used by clinic providers and rooming staff to communicate with our research staff about particular patients. Someone from the research team may request that you approach your patient to ask them if they are interested in participating in the study. Utilizing this BPA tool will facilitate this process with you simply indicating your patient’s response with a quick two-click response of “Interested”, “Declined”, or “Not Eligible”. Your response to this BPA will be automatically be communicated to the research team, who can then follow up with your patient to screen and possibly enroll them into the study. We look forward to working with you.

Any questions in regards to this study can be sent to the Study Coordinator, Javier Rizo – javier.rizo@duke.edu or the main study email – vilardaga-lab@duke.edu.

Please let me know if you have any further questions, comments or concerns. We’ll be in touch soon to check-in once this BPA goes live.
