From the Director

Continued Happy Fun-bruary to all! Special thanks to Amanda and Jeff Boyd for hosting the Funbruary House Party this weekend and to GME for hosting the Duke beats Carolina basketball watching party.

You guys were awesome about alerting me to the great work your colleagues are doing!

Thank you to Micah McClain, Lynn Bowlby and Jay Wilder (with host Tony Galanos) for serving on our “Faculty Stories” panel this week. We really appreciate you taking the time to talk with us.

We had our first resident-faculty dinner - a great time had by all with Jenny Van Kirk, Julia Xu, Sarah Cohen, Wynn Hunter, and Lauren Sharan with faculty lead Diana McNeill. We got some great ideas from their conversation and can’t wait to hear from the second group.

Look out for the Social Action Council meeting this week - join fellow residents in figuring out ways we can make a difference in Durham.  The Social Action Council was the group that put together the Lincoln Clinic Volunteer Program, and we are looking for the next great ideas, big or small to keep us involved and giving back to our community.

SARs, please don’t forget to log your procedures and to register for the boards before the price goes up.

Kudos

Kudos this week to Lakshmi Krishnan for her awesome SAR talk, to Ali Saadi for a great chair’s conference, to Adam Brock for receiving a gold star from a patient, to Jared Lowe from Kahli Zietlow, who cared for a patient who said “Dr. Lowe worked triple overtime to provide great patient care,” to the 7800 NF residents Sam Lindner and Lauren Collins from Brittany Gatta and the 7800 team for being helpful, thorough, and thoughtful, to Kristen Glisinski from the MICU Crew for being an awesome fellow, to Maggie Infeld from Meg Steiner for helping out so much as an ACR, and more to Maggie Infeld from Laura Caputo for her great work with the physical exam rounds, and also for helping a veteran out with a wheelchair as he was leaving the VA (spotted by Michael Grant), and to Amanda Boyd from Ali Saadi for outstanding work on a complex patient. Also thanks to Claire Il’Giovine for bringing food to our entire night float crew this past week!  I honestly think she would have done it even if Zach wasn’t on nights. Also Kudos to Katie Charles from Ravi Karra for PHENOMENAL work on cardiology!

PubMed from the Program

It is spring abstract season, and you guys are doing really well at getting your work accepted!

In the first of several upcoming SGIM abstracts, this week’s pubmed from the program features Leah Machen! “Racial variations in medical care spending patterns among high risk primary care patients: results from the STOP-DKD study” with mentor Clarissa Diamantidis.

Have a great week!

Hi everyone.  Just another reminder to look at all reminders each visit and focus on  HEDIS specific reminders.  HEDIS stands for Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS).  It is one of the most widely used sets of health care performance measure in the United States. The term “HEDIS” originated in the late 1980s as the product of a group of forward-thinking employers and quality experts, and was entrusted to NCQA in the early 1990s. - See more at: http://www.ncqa.org/hedis-quality-measurement/hedis-measures#sthash.fGL5lsy3.dpuf.

The National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) defines Quality Health Care as the extent to which patients get the care they need in a manner that most effectively protects or restores their health. This means having timely access to care, getting treatment that medical evidence has found to be effective and getting appropriate preventive care. Choosing a high quality health plan--and a high-quality doctor--plays a significant role in determining whether you'll get high-quality care.

Remember HEDIS compliance does tie into saving lives and improving our patients' health.

Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of men and women in the USA. Many of the HEDIS metrics (see attached list) measure how well we are doing at addressing the risk factors for heart disease in our patients such as tobacco use, high blood pressure, diabetes control and elevated lipids.

Stroke is the No. 1 cause of long term disability in the USA. Many of the HEDIS metrics measure how well we are doing at addressing the risk factors for stroke in our patients such as tobacco use, high blood pressure, diabetes and elevated lipids.

Lung cancer is the number one cancer killer in the USA and Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second most deadly. Breast Cancer and cervical cancer are also still out there negatively impacting countless women, claiming lives and causing long term. HEDIS focuses on tobacco cessation as well as screening for most of these killers.

Lastly, behavioral health issues continue to take their toll on Veterans their families and our nation. HEDIS screens for critical ones like depression, alcoholism and PTSD.

Please let us know in PRIME clinic if you have any questions about these reminders or anything else that we can help with.
