From the Program

Congratulations to all who participated in NC ACP! See below for program winners and a full list of participants. Last week also brought the JARs together for a faculty networking event at Dr. Klotman's (thanks to Dr. Klotman for hosting) and time with the Duke pet therapy program. Click here to learn about the program and how to place an order for pet therapy.

Coming up this week:

  • Tomorrow there will be an information session about heme/onc fellowship at Duke from 4-5 p.m. in room 212C in the Medical Center Library.
  • Thursday, March 2, PWIM and the Resident Professional Development Committee invite you to attend Stories of Careers in Medicine from 6-8 p.m. in the Faculty Lounge (Seeley Mudd Building).
  • Friday night, March 3, is the annual Charity Auction, and tonight join your colleagues for Indian food, games and drinks as part of Funbruary!

Don't forget: Please send any of your news or kudos for your colleagues to Erin Payne. View all event photos from last week.

Have a great week!

Kudos

Kudos this week go to Megan Dupuis, AJ Blood, Sarah Nouri, Michael Dorry, Brittany Gatta and Caroline Sloan for helping so much with obtaining donations for the Charity Auction. Also to the many residents, attendings, and IM administrators (Tia, Lynsey, Jen, Erin, Emily, Mary) for helping with planning, making generous donations, and donating their time/talents towards the auction from Maggie Infeld and Coco Fraiche. Kudos to Lauren Ring and Stephanie Li for being amazing co residents in the VA MICU. They are consistently supportive both pre and post call no matter what and great role models. And to Kevin Smith from one of his peers: "I just want to say that guy is an amazing primary care doctor for his patients, he motivated me to do better." Additional kudos to Lauren Ring for excellent care of a patient transfer to the Durham VA. And kudos to Sarah Nouri and Nicole Helmke for being amazing JARS and providing great patient care on VAgen med and to Corey Bradley, Nicole Jawitz, and Claire Smith for fantastic cross cover all month, from Matt Labriola.

  • Manisha Bhattacharya
  • Azalea Kim
  • Lakshmi Krishnan
  • Matt Labriola
  • Jared Lowe
  • Leah Machen
  • Joe Plaksin

Also, big thanks to Patrick Hemming, one of our attendings at the DOC, for being proactive in mentoring GIM residents and linking them to scholarship opportunities!

New Next Year

We will be launching a new one-week rotation called L.E.A.D, Leadership, Education, Administration and Doctoring (you see what I did there?!). This will be a clinic “immersion” experience at your respective continuity sites where you will have the lead role in helping the clinic flow. Each site will have its own schedule and curriculum, stay tuned for details!

Feedback

We have heard your feedback on the continuity clinic survey and at town halls, thank you! We are always working to make clinic experiences smoother. You can always drop an email to Dr. Zipkin and your clinic leadership to give us your thoughts and suggestions. TIA.

QI Corner

Next Patient Safety and Quality Improvement Committee (PSQC) meeting will be at 5:30 p.m. on Tues., Feb. 28. Location TBD (likely in the med res library). We will be continuing work on the inpatient HIV screening project. All residents are invited (whether you come to every meeting or you’ve never been to one, we’d love to have you get involved).

Faculty-Resident Research Grant

We are pleased to invite you to apply for the 2017 annual “Faculty-Resident Research Grant” applications. The applications are due on April 9, 2017 for a funding start date on July 1, 2017. For JARs, the funding end date is June 30, 2018. For Interns, the funding end date is June 30, 2019

Please find the application forms, instructions, and sample NIH format biosketch (the old NIH Bioskecth format forms are acceptable for your CV).

Please submit your application as a single word or pdf file that includes your mentor’s NIH Biosketch (the new versus old NIH Biosketch format is optional for your mentor). Please email a pdf file of the signed mentor's support letter with your application by April 9, either as part of the entire application or separately.

Each proposal must have a Human subjects section that describes the protections of the patients and patient data, describe the consent procedure if applicable, status of IRB protocol (to be submitted, already submitted or already approved, as appropriate) etc. This section is required whether to not your project is a retrospective or prospective study, whether patient identifiers are exposed (or not) during data collection/analysis, whether consent is to be obtained or there is a waiver for consent. Please see attached example language that you can adapt to your own specific protocol after discussing with your research mentor.

The next opportunity to apply for a research grant will be in September 2017. For any questions, please contact murat.arcasoy@duke.edu.
