Internal Medicine Residency News, February 6, 2017

From the Director

Happy FUN-bruary! Thanks to Schuyler Jones and the Orgain Society for hosting a great kickoff at Hope Valley Brewing! Thanks also to Manesh Patel for hosting a town hall with the cardiology division on Thursday. We ended the week with a bake-off contest, with plenty of good treats (Erin, I hear the Nutella cookies were really good!). Check out this week’s calendar for more fun activities, including Thursday night’s GME-wide Duke vs Carolina party at Tyler's. If you are interested in getting involved in the happenings around the state and country, please contact Becca Lumsden, Johnny Komisar or Govind Krishnan - they have organized a great deal of information that you can take advantage of.

Continued reminders to the SARs to sign up for the ABIM exam before fees go up, and to get going on those procedure logs before the end of the year.

Kudos

Kudos this week to our current night resident team for general awesomeness (Dan, Zach, Megan, Amanda and Nicole), with an additional kudos to Amanda from Ali Saadi for handling a particularly busy night with style and grace. More kudos to Tanya Aylward for an awesome chair’s conference - great case, great discussion and great attendance - and to Linda Koshy for her fantastic SAR talk on diabetes management.

And a HUGE congratulations from the entire residency program to Dr. Klotman for being named the Dean of the Duke University School of Medicine!

PubMed from the Program

This week’s pubmed from the program goes to Ankeet Bhatt for his publication in JACC- Heart Failure.  Bhatt A, Devore A, Hernandez A and Mentz R.  Can Vaccinations Improve Heart Failure Outcomes?  JACC:Heart Failure 2017; DOI: 10:1016/j.jchf.2016.12.007

Have a great week!

We are pleased to invite you to apply for the 2017 annual “Faculty-Resident Research Grant” applications. The applications are due on April 9, 2017 for a funding start date on July 1, 2017. For JARs, the funding end date is June 30, 2018. For Interns, the funding end date is June 30, 2019

Please find the application forms, instructions, and sample NIH format biosketch (the old NIH Bioskecth format forms are acceptable for your CV).

Please email a pdf file of the signed mentor's support letter with your application by April 9, either as part of the entire application or separately.

Each proposal must have a Human subjects section that describes the protections of the patients and patient data, describe the consent procedure if applicable, status of IRB protocol (to be submitted, already submitted or already approved, as appropriate) etc. This section is required whether to not your project is a retrospective or prospective study, whether patient identifiers are exposed (or not) during data collection/analysis, whether consent is to be obtained or there is a waiver for consent. Please see attached example language that you can adapt to your own specific protocol after discussing with your research mentor.

The next opportunity to apply for a research grant will be in September 2017. For any questions, please contact murat.arcasoy@duke.edu.
