From the Director

Happy 2021! Midpoint of the academic year and clearly a milestone to put 2020 in the rearview. As always, tremendous thanks to all of you for your commitment and dedication to outstanding care of your patients, as well as your unwavering support of each other and the whole DukeFam. I hope everyone was able to get some rest/relaxation over the holiday schedule. It’s busy everywhere across all of the hospitals and is likely to be so for the next few months, so just know that we will be continuing to collaborate, advocate, and communicate with our colleagues across the health system as we navigate the next few months.

Recruitment is back in full force! We can bring it home strong through the month of January as we all work to bring in an amazing class of new interns for July 2021. Many thanks to all for your participation.

Kudos
Kudos from over the break to Matt Abbott from Dr. Dinushika Mohottige for going above and beyond on nephrology consults, to Cam Strong and Michelle Ferreira for working overtime on a particularly high census, and Jen Dziwis and Damarcus Ingram for being super supportive of their colleagues by taking on a couple of their patients to help even out the censuses on the two teams (from Dr. Laura Caputo), to Lena Eder from Payton Kendsersky for a much needed hand in the VA CICU/VA Cards Consults, to Deborah Rose for going above and beyond in the CICU from Zach Lorsch, to Sean Chen, Alex Reddy, Nathaniel Harris and Lonnie Sullivan for teaching and general greatness on DRH Nights (from Omar Martinez Uribe), to Matt Abbott for recognizing a STEMI in a patient on the floor (from Mike Cosiano), to Cassie Lautredou for the most epic work rounds ever (from Emory Buck), to Aman Kansal, Katie Shpanskaya and Sith Sekar for being an amazing VA team (from Sarah Greene), to Saad Atiq and Nathan Brajer for excellent cross cover (from Sith Sekar), to James Helzberg for fearless team leadership (from Priyanka Patel).

Clinic Corner: Ambulatory

Contributed by Daniella Zipkin

Ambulatory Town Hall
One morning report session will be devoted to an Ambulatory Town Hall, led by Hannah Dzimitrowicz. One has occurred already, and two more are scheduled. This is an opportunity to debrief with your chief about all things clinic life, and share your feedback and suggestions. Please attend and be represented!

It’s 2021
And the pandemic presses on… Clinic life looks different at the different sites, because they represent vastly different payer mixes and health systems. While the VA is doubling down on telehealth for the long haul, Pickett Road is incentivized to do as much in person care as possible, and DOC is somewhere in the middle. We recognize that this variety can impact your learning, and we are strategizing how to fill the gaps. If you have thoughts on this, please share with Hannah and Dani!

Pharmacy faxes in your email
Every so often, a pharmacy or insurance company will track you down and end up sending clinical information to the fax machine in the residency office, which is currently routing to staff emails to monitor. Since these faxes can be connected to inpatients or outpatients, and the staff have no way of knowing, please (1) look at the patient’s name and (2) forward to the appropriate place, whether that is your own gen med team, the current gen med team taking care of that patient, or your clinic. Remember, your clinic has a protocol for managing all the paperwork that comes in – you don’t have to necessarily address the issue, just plug it into the system so it can be addressed over at the clinic the way other information is. When routing to your clinic, please check in with faculty or nursing leadership if you have questions about where things go. Thanks!
