Internal Medicine Residency News, Jan. 7, 2019

From the Director

Happy 2019 everyone! Thank you again for your hard work over the holiday blocks, and I hope everyone had a chance to rest and reconnect with family and friends as well. We are excited to kick off the last 5 recruiting days of the year! Also, this week marks the “thread change” for our JARs and interns on ambulatory, new ACRs, and probably an annoying opportunity to have to reset passwords. As Kara reminded you, please also send in your SAC requests for blocks 10-12 ASAP as well.

Other announcements

  • SARs, don’t forget to register for the ABIM boards.
  • JARs, if you haven’t taken Step 3 yet, please sign up ASAP as you need to have a passing score reported before receiving a PGY-3 contract.
  • Interns, you are over halfway done with intern year! WOO HOO!!
  • For all categorical residents– if you haven’t signed up for a semi-annual meeting with me or Bill, please contact Ernest ASAP!

Kudos

Kudos from over the holidays to Lauren Sharan, Brittany Gatta and Alex Grubb for amazing teamwork and ICU care of a very sick veteran (from attending Francis Miller), to Dagmara Danek and Puya Abbassi from Neuro JAR Maggie Kilgore for going above and beyond on neurology over the break, and to Marge DeOliviera from Tara Spector for great care of a sick patient overnight on Duke NF.

Congratulations to Lynsey Michnowicz on her engagement!

PubMed from the Program
This week’s pubmed from the program goes to Maggie Salinger for her op-ed in “The Hill.”  Great work, Maggie!!

Have a great start to 2019!

Clinic Corner: DOC

Contributed by Lynn Bowlby

  1. NEW at DOC—stickers in your folder box, with all 3 PP names! These are to be used on your business cards, put on the back so all 3 names are known to the patient. Not using your business cards? Be sure to pick them up from the Res office, you are welcome to keep some at the DOC, lots of shelf space in the preceptor room.
  2. LAB followup!  Super important issue, be sure to MYChart, call, have your nurse call (from your Care Team—posted on Bulletin board behind where Dr Hemming usually stands) or send letter (send to Carolyn Lawrence –our medical records person). Please document any call, can do that right on the lab.
  3. Please be sure to let me know of any challenges with rooming patients or other DOC challenges…we are working on them, and the more we all know the more we can help.
  4. Palliative Care at the DOC—send pts to me, or have me see patient with you..focus on symptoms, and how to help patients feel better, GOC discussions , ACP …just write in followup section DR B—Palliative.

Thanks for all that you do!
