From the Director

Hope everyone had a good weekend (a long weekend for some!).  We are closing in on the end of recruitment - three more recruiting days this year!

Thanks to everyone for your continued enthusiasm and participation in our recruitment events.  Once recruitment is over, it will nearly be time to be ready for the second annual FUN-bruary, as well as the amazing Charity Auction, to be held on March 3rd.  Maggie Infeld and Coco Fraiche are in charge of the auction, so please reach out to them if you are interested in helping this fantastic event benefitting Senior PharmASSIST and the DOC Patient Fund.

New Cardiology Division Chief Dr. Manesh Patel would love to meet with you. He’s hoping to discuss cardiology education at Duke during a “Town Hall” style meeting on Feb. 2 at 6 p.m. in the med res library.  This is not to discuss careers in cardiology, but to talk about cardiology education for all residents, including the opening of the new CCU in just a few weeks!

Kudos

Kudos this week to Hari Ramalingam for a fantastic recruitment afternoon report and Megan Gillum for an equally fantastic chair’s conference! Also to the night float crew of Robert Diep, Rachel Feder, Emily Kinsey, Jackie Bowell and Rebecca Ruf from your SS-NF Div Patel - he says you are doing an amazing job! More kudos to Luke Cerbin from Drs. Gehrig and Bashore for his work as the ‘teaching JAR’ on the new cardiology service, and to Madi for her idea to bring in Guasaca for lunch this week - way to switch it up! And CONGRATULATIONS to Titus Ngeno on his engagement! Also kudos from Manisha Bhattacharya to the VA GMers this month Irena Tan, Kent Feng, Ankeet Bhatt and dayfloat Taylor Bazemore for fantastic teamwork!

Thank you to our awesome My Take residents Hannah Dzimictrowicz, Megan Dupuis, Christine Bates, Daniel Turner, Luke Cerbin, and John Musgrove and to our tour guides as well Talisha Ramchal, Jenny Van Kirk, Lindsey Shantzer, AJ Blood, Christine Bates, Joe Plaksin, Brian Wasserman, and Manisha Bhattacharya.

PubMed from the Program

This week’s pubmed from the program goes to Wynn Hunter and Ben Ranard, who both had articles mentioned in the yearly Top 10 of Health Affairs

Clinic Corner: Pickett Road Clinic

Contributed by Sharon Rubin, MD

The roads have melted from the snow for Pickett Road. We were closed Monday and Tuesday morning but able to open to take care of patients in the afternoon. We celebrated the Holidays with gift giving to each other and delicious pot luck and donated a huge box full of toys to the Durham Rescue Mission. The clinic has been busy with interviewing for new providers and CMA staff. Interns and JARs have increased their patient slots to 5 and 7 respectively. But we emphasize the need for education and blocked slots to enable our residents to go to noon conference. We are hopeful in the future to set up lunch in conjunction with GME to watch noon conference remotely. Proudly we are close to completing at least 3 mini cex for ALL of our residents these next few months.

Humanism in Medicine Lecture Series

Haider Warraich, MD, cardiovascular diseases fellow, will give a presentation, "Searching for Beauty at the End of Life," based on his upcoming book, "Modern Death," on Jan. 17 at noon in Duke North 2002. From Dr. Warraich: "I think many of us are affected by death in the hospital in a very powerful way, but frequently with negative emotional consequences. In this talk, I hope to convey how we can find meaning and beauty in dying and change a narrative in which death is the enemy." Learn more.
