From the Director
We are on our last week of interview season! Thanks to all for your continued enthusiasm for meeting our future interns. We close out this week with the GME-wide URM Second Look Weekend, so also thanks in advance to those who are helping out and meeting with our applicants who are coming back for a second visit.
Get ready for Fun-bruary, just around the corner! We all know that February is the shortest month, it’s still dark, and it is likely still cold - we all can use a little pick-me-up. Erin and the Residency Council are deep into planning our events for the month, so stay tuned. And certainly mark your calendars for the GME-wide Duke-UNC game watching party on Feb. 9.
For current JARs, we will start having career planning (fellowship and job) workshops after the interview season closes, as well as a meet and greet with division chiefs and fellowship directors at Dr. Klotman’s house. Keep an eye out for dates and times! Of course, if you have any questions before the meetings, please be sure to check in with me or your advisor!
Kudos
Kudos this week to Lara Kapp from Abby Jakubec for going above and beyond to help out on neuro nights, to Ashley Spann for an awesome chair’s conference, and to Jacob Kaufman for pushing us along in the discussion. And a belated kudos to John Musgrove from Ali Saadi for exemplary work as the CCU teach resident. Also big thank you’s to our My Take speakers Lara Kapp, AJ Blood, and Jenny Van Kirk, as well as our tour guides Lauren Sharan, Sky Vanderburg, Chris Pumill, Adam Barnett, Rachel Feder, and Joe Plaksin.
PubMed from the Program
This week’s pubmed from the program goes to Peter Hu for "Efficacy and Safety of Apixaban Compared With Warfarin in Patients With Atrial Fibrillation and Peripheral Artery Disease: Insights From the ARISTOTLE Trial." Peter T. Hu, MD; Renato D. Lopes, MD, PhD, MHS; Susanna R. Stevens, MS; Lars Wallentin, MD, PhD; Laine Thomas, PhD; John H. Alexander, MD, MHS; Michael Hanna, MD; Basil S. Lewis, MD; Freek W. A. Verheugt, MD, PhD; Christopher B. Granger, MD; W. Schuyler Jones, MD. (J Am Heart Assoc . 2017;6:e004699. DOI: 10.1161/JAHA.116.004699.)
Have a great week, stay safe and stay warm!

Clinic Corner: VA PRIME Clinic
Contributed by Sonal Patel, MD
Welcome to our new front desk MSAs, Destiny Gilchrist and Latasha Alston! Our clinics at the VA were open for our first snow storm of the season. Thanks to everyone that came in and kept our clinic running.
Just a few reminders:
Please continue to communicate with your PRIME team regarding any issues with following up either due to vacation or a busy rotation.
We are still trying to work on continuity so please use your team grids that show what weeks you or your team are available and “green.”
The return to clinic orders have changed to include a CID (Clinically indicated date) and a No later than date. You are only required to place a CID date, please use the date of the week that correlates to when you or a team member is “green” and in clinic. If you need to enter a No later than date please guide the staff regarding this.
PRIME Psych referrals require a consult for a new patient visit into PRIME Psych. A text order no longer suffices. The patient will then be called later and scheduled for first appointment in PRIME Psych by the mental health schedulers, not at our front desk.
Trouble finding ICD-10 codes? Use icd10data.com. Or ask Siri, “What’s the ICD-10 code for pharyngitis?” (This works!)
Thanks everyone.

Each proposal must have a Human subjects section that describes the protections of the patients and patient data, describe the consent procedure if applicable, status of IRB protocol (to be submitted, already submitted or already approved, as appropriate) etc. This section is required whether to not your project is a retrospective or prospective study, whether patient identifiers are exposed (or not) during data collection/analysis, whether consent is to be obtained or there is a waiver for consent. Please see attached example language that you can adapt to your own specific protocol after discussing with your research mentor.
The next opportunity to apply for a research grant will be in September 2017. For any questions, please contact murat.arcasoy@duke.edu.
