Internal Medicine Residency News, July 19th, 2021

From the Director

Thanks to all for another excellent July week! Interns have started their meetings with Dr. Butterly and me, coach pairings were sent out, alumni council books were delivered and Omar Martinez Uribe and Erin Song joined us on a tour of the under construction 2100 unit to help give feedback on the workrooms!  Fellowship application ‘due date’ is this week as well.

This week, SARs and those who are also applying for fellowships from the JAR class should be on the lookout for a signup to do 1:1 mock zoom interviews with Dr. Kath Pollak. Dr. Pollak has been doing this for several years and is consistently rated as “VERY HELPFUL” from your peers. Many thanks to Dr. Pollak for her time as well as Drs. Svetkey and Cooney for their support of this important activity.

Kudos
Kudos this week to Sean Taasan from Drs. Robby Pease and Neeru Mettu for quick thinking in an emergent patient situation, to Hayley Cunningham from cardiology fellow Anthony Carnicelli for an outstanding patient handoff to clinic, to Londyn Robinson from newly minted Rheumatology fellow Sonali Bracken for going above and beyond for a patient in clinic, to Saad Atiq for a fantastic SAR talk, to Geargin Wilson for (ahem) leading LEADs, and to Zach Lorsch for a fantastic Cohen Conference, to Hannah Florian from Dr. Zipkin for patient-centered advice on dietary needs and to Forrest Gamble from Omar Martinez Uribe for being a boss on NF.

Thank you Suchita Sata for alerting us to an opportunity to present at the 2021 NC Society of Hospital Medicine meeting (See below).

Pubmed from the Program
This weeks pubmed from the program goes to Med Psych PD Dr. Jane Gagliardi for her recent editorial in the American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry “What are the data really telling us about systemic racism?”

Have a great week!
Aimee

Clinic Corner: VA/PRIME

Contributed by Leigh Wynkoop and Sonal Patel

Welcome to our PRIME interns! We have one more wave of intern orientation to go. It’s wonderful to have fresh faces in clinic.

Leigh has VA COVID vaccine lanyards for PRIME residents – bring your vaccine card – an electronic copy is best as you may need to email it to Occ Health. Please message her ahead of time to be sure she’s available.

If your patient is leaving after 4:30 PM, please walk them to the side door which exits to the parking lot – the front doors will be locked so don’t send them to the lobby to exit.

We are working on getting business cards made for each PRIME team so you can share them with your patients. Please use PRIME cards, not your Duke business cards, while seeing your patients at the VA.

Please be sure to reach out to us about any problems you’re having; we are here to support you.
