From the Director

Stead Cup kickoff! Thank you to Dr. Harvey Cohen for teaching us some Duke history, and to the Chiefs and Stead Leaders for starting the year off with some good natured competition. And to the Orgain Society (led by the legendary “Duke residents run towards the patient who needs help, not away from the patient who needs help,” Dr. Tony Gutierrez) for winning the Friday trivia. Got suggestions for a Stead event? Contact the chiefs or your Stead leader.

Kudos
Kudos this week to the SARs (and Tanmay and Josh!) for getting those fellowship applications in. I hear that there are already interviews being scheduled! Also kudos to Alex Sullivan from Tammy Hsu, Aarti Thakkar (sub-i), and Christine Wu (med student) for being a fun and efficient team leader and always getting us all out on time despite a full list and last minute admits, to my gen med team members Joe Lerman, Andrew Morgan and John Davy for outstanding patient care and teamwork, including doing a handoff of a sick patient at the bedside (and also to our other team members Kelly Buchanan, Rachael Mahle, Cindy Pabon, Eric Powers, Lena Eder and Hannah Robinson for outstanding work), to Dr. Butterly’s team for already celebrating with a team dinner (see the pic!), to Madhu Eluri and Diana Mosquera for SUPERB SAR TALKS, from Keva Garg to Ceshae Harding and Ann Cameron Barr for making July gen med so fun and easy, from Anmol Singh to the 9300 PGY-1 team: Aman Kansal, Sam Rausch, and Rachel Tobin. Special shout out especially to Sam, who showed great poise and empathy during a very stressful situation. Kudos to Josh Lee from Jan Dillard for outstanding patient-centered care at the DOC, and also to Josh Lee from Dr. Emler at the DVAMC for going above and beyond to help a sick patient. And kudos to Bhavik Patel for phenomenal teaching and teamwork on cardiology nights from anesthesia intern Katherine Sun, to Akash Goyal for fantastic work running a team, teaching and onboarding new interns on gen med from Colby Feeney, to Hayley Cunningham for compassionate care of patients on general neurology from Sean Taasan, to Joe Wawrzynski from Andrew Muir for outstanding work in GI clinic, and to all our Duke Gen Med SARs for a fantastic first month (Keva Garg, Lauren Donnangelo, Katie Pollard, Alex Sullivan, Joe Lerman, Akash Goyal and Jess Regan – see the pic from their last SAR report).

Thank you to Dr. Murat Arcasoy for introducing the options for resident research.  Please read his email if you haven’t already – there are opportunities for funding twice per year. Interns, don’t worry about applying in the fall of intern year!  And thank you to Faculty Connections LLC, the Department of Medicine and the Stead Research Foundation for funding our resident research!

All trainees at Duke have FREE access to Personal Assistance Services (PAS), which is the faculty/employee assistance program of Duke University. The staff of licensed professionals offer confidential assessment, short-term counseling, and referrals to help resolve a range of personal, work, and family problems. PAS services are available free of charge to Duke faculty and staff, and their immediate family members. An appointment to meet with a PAS counselor may be arranged by calling the PAS office at 919-416-1PAS (919-416-1727), Monday through Friday between 8:00 A.M. and 5:00 P.M. For assistance after hours, residents and fellows can call the Blood and Body Fluid Hotline (115 inside DUH, 919-684-1115 outside) for referral to behavioral health resources. Another resource is Duke Outpatient Psychiatry Referrals at (919) 684-0100 or 1-888-ASK-DUKE. https://www.hr.duke.edu/pas/
