From the Director

It’s the chiefs' last week…please be sure to stop by their offices and say THANK YOU for an incredible year. It’s impossible to list their accomplishments and phenomenal leadership in a small paragraph, but let’s just sum it up with #legendsofduke. Thank you so much for everything Jason, Marc, Dinushika and Sam!  Many congratulations to Dinushika on a standing-room, standing-ovation Medicine Grand Rounds. If you haven’t seen it, please take the time to watch (here).

Kudos

We have a lot of kudos this week!

Kudos to Tessa Genders for an outstanding chair’s conference, with guest faculty Ara Metjian; to Kevin Smith for an awesome SAR talk; to Juliette Logan, Leigh Wynkoop and Sipa Yankey from Nate Moulton for helping him out last week with coverage; to Suchita Shah Sata from Elizabeth McCamic for covering team pagers during Dinushika’s amazing Grand Rounds; and to Steve Pappas for presenting the case during grand rounds.

More recognition and kudos to our Appleseed Teaching Award winners, presented by the seconnd-year medical students. This is a huge honor, and congratulations to Tanya Aylward, Hysem Eldik, Nicole Helmke, Tara Holder, Emily Kinsey, Phil Liu, Juan Magana, Dan Maselli, Maggie Moses, Meg Steiner, Kevin Smith, and Eric Wei. We also have a big congratulations to Kevin Smith for winning the medical students Excellence in Professionalism Award. We are not at all surprised that Kevin won, but very proud of him!

Clinic Corner: PRIME

PRIME staff were stunned by having a surprise lunch brought to them by the SARs. At our monthly staff meeting the next day, they were still raving about it and how touched they were. Thank you from everyone! As you can see from the photos, the staff were all smiles to be there, though Charlie seems especially eager to get a plate. (Oh, in case you hadn’t heard, Charlie got married last month!) One of you residents stated at our recent town hall that your life in PRIME got so much better as an intern once you realized how much you could lean on the nurses to help with tasks outside of the visit. We are a team, after all!

We are going to miss each of you and wish you the very best going forward. If you are staying at Duke/DVAMC, know you can stop by anytime to say hi and share updates. And if you’re afar and want to stay in touch, send an email – it’s always great to hear from people who have sailed from these shores to new adventures. Meanwhile, to those returning to PRIME, here’s to a great year ahead.

It truly is our honor and privilege to work with each of you as we strive to provide exceptional primary care to our Veterans.

To close out the academic year, the DoM book club is partnering up with the Narrative Medicine Colloquium and DukeAHEAD to cohost a special end-of-year book club event!  This time we'll be discussing "What Patients Say, What Doctors Hear" by Dr. Danielle Ofri on Tuesday, June 19, at 5:30 p.m.

Feeling down? Need to talk to someone? Opportunities for Wellness
All trainees at Duke have FREE access to Personal Assistance Services (PAS), which is the faculty/employee assistance program of Duke University. The staff of licensed professionals offer confidential assessment, short-term counseling, and referrals to help resolve a range of personal, work, and family problems. PAS services are available free of charge to Duke faculty and staff, and their immediate family members. An appointment to meet with a PAS counselor may be arranged by calling the PAS office at 919-416-1PAS (919-416-1727), Monday through Friday between 8:00 A.M. and 5:00 P.M. For assistance after hours, residents and fellows can call the Blood and Body Fluid Hotline (115 inside DUH, 919-684-1115 outside) for referral to behavioral health resources. Another resource is Duke Outpatient Psychiatry Referrals at (919) 684-0100 or 1-888-ASK-DUKE. https://www.hr.duke.edu/pas/
