From the Program

Hi everyone! Hope your week is off to a good start! This week brings us the Faculty v. Resident basketball game, book club and the end of year picnic! We look forward to spending time together.

Congratulations SARs! We had a wonderful time honoring the SAR class Saturday night and know you are moving on to do amazing things in your careers.

Don't forget: Please send any of your news or kudos for your colleagues to Erin Payne.

Have a great week!

Kudos

Kudos this week go to Maggie Kilgore, Irena Tan, and Johnny Komisar from Lara Kapp for being such an awesome, fun and helpful team that always helped each other out without reservation and keep each other learning every day on 9100. Kudos to Tanya Aylward, Maggie Moses, and Caroline Sloane from Lindsey Shantzer for being super supportive and helping to manage complicated patients in the CCU. To Phil Liu from Peter Kussin and Megan Dupuis for coming in early to serve as a Mandarin translator for a critical  family conference and for his compassion for the family and the patient, who Phil recently cared for in the MICU. Kudos to Ashley Spann from Bonike Oloruntoba for going above and beyond her responsibilities on the hepatology service last week, and to Michael Grant from Cory Miller for superb work during a code on 9300. Kudos to Alyson Shogan for a great SAR lecture and AJ Blood for an excellent chair's conference. Finally, congrats and kudos to Paul Riordan for being honored at the annual Duke Strength, Hope, and Caring gala as overall winner in the category of Physician! Amazing work!

PubMed from the Program

This week's pubmed from the program goes to Lauren Collins, her mentor Jason Stout and their colleagues for the acceptance of their manuscript in Open Forum Infectious Diseases, entitled: Incidence, Long-term Outcomes and Healthcare Utilization of Patients with HIV/AIDS and Disseminated Mycobacterium avium Complex from 1992-2015 .

Clinic Corner: DOC

Contributed by Lynn Bowlby

Hi all!

  1. Redesign 2/ HIDOC with Laurie (Laura) Germano as the Care Manager (think Marigny!) We are doing more onsite medical care--IV, managing SOB,  abd pain, mild DKA for example, without sending to the ED!
  2. DOC has been part of a grant project related to improving geriatric services. We now have a structured process for assessing memory issues and connecting patients and their caregivers to resources and support. It takes our whole team, from the front desk staff giving out the screening forms (orange), to the CMAs doing the mini-cog, to providers/BHC/LCSW doing clinical assessment and referring to resources, and so much more.  Thanks for all you do to support these very vulnerable patients!
  3. We won 2 awards just the other week! for Team work--TAG team, our Coumadin management, and our work with complex patients!
  4. Continue the smoking cessation referrals, Amb referral Smoking cessation and DM and HTN group...if need individual visit with Holly, put Holly 1:1 in followup ...

and of course, on site Cardiology, Pulmonary and Hep C for those that can't get to Duke South...

thanks for all that you do!

LB and team!

Book Club

Please join us for the final Book Club event of the academic year, on Wednesday, June 7, from 5:30-7 p.m. in the Searle Center Faculty Lounge. We’ll be discussing an audience pick novel, A Man Called Ove, by Fredrik Backman.  It’s available at bookstores and online- and do remember you don’t have to finish the novel to attend, as long as you don’t mind some spoilers! There’s a film adaptation on Amazon Prime as well!

RSVP at your convenience to laura.caputo@duke.edu OR manisha.bhattacharya@duke.edu.  As always, feel free to reach out with questions or suggestions, and share this information with friends.

Employee Occupational Health & Wellness, including LIVE FOR LIFE, will relocate to the space previously occupied by the Student Health Center in Duke Clinic beginning June 12, 2017.

New Location for Employee Occupational Health & Wellness

The office will relocate to the sub-basement of the Orange Zone in Duke Clinic and will be accessible from the following two locations:

From Duke South Clinic:

  1. Enter Duke South on 1st floor
  2. Follow the signs to Clinic 1K
  3. Take the double orange elevators to the sub-basement
  4. Follow the hallway to the right to the EOHW check in desk

From Flowers Drive: Enter the sub-basement of the Orange Zone directly from Flowers Drive across from the Sarah P. Duke Gardens.

Phone numbers for EOHW will not change, and Personal Assistance Service will remain in its current location at Erwin Tower. For more information, including a map and directions to the new location, please visit the Duke Human Resources website.

Among its services, EOHW provides employment and travel health reviews, treatment of occupational illness and injury, occupational health surveillance, influenza vaccinations, FMLA and ADA reviews, and employee wellness programs through LIVE FOR LIFE.

Clearing the VA - Some reminders for outgoing house staff

As you move on to accomplish other great things, there are a few items we would like you to complete on or before your last day of your last rotation at the Durham VAMC.

  1. Progress Notes/Discharge Summaries - Please make sure to sign (co-sign) or delete (if not needed) any progress notes and/or discharge summaries.  Any left unsigned will have to be reviewed by the Section Chief or Chief Resident for disposition.
  2. Alerts - Please clear all active alerts prior to leaving.  Also assign a surrogate in CPRS to receive any future alerts so that we can ensure any urgent clinical issues are addressed.  If you are unsure of who to assign as a surrogate, please talk to your section chief or Chief Resident (PRIME residents should speak with Dr. Patel or Leigh Wynkoop).
  3. Personal Lists - Please delete all personal lists created in Vista/CPRS (and remove yourself from any team lists).  If these lists are left, they will continue to generate unnecessary alerts that will go to your surrogate and either the surrogate, Section Chief, or Chief Resident will have to review before they could be deleted.
  4. Sticky Notes - Please review, resolve, and delete any "sticky notes".  These notes can only be seen by you so if there are actions that need to be taken after you're gone please document in the record or hand-off to a continuing clinical staff such as a team resident/fellow, mid-level, or other attending.
  5. PIV Card Reader - If you were issued a PIV Card Reader, please return it to me.  If I am not available, you can leave it in the Medical Service Office (C8017).

Thank you for your service to the Medical Service and Durham VAHCS.  We wish you only the best in your future endeavors!
