It’s ACC Tournament week and into March Madness and MATCH DAY coming up in two short weeks. Admittedly, my NCAA hype is lower than usual given the abysmal performance of our Blue Devils on Saturday. But there is always winning 5 games in 5 days to think about. Bringing this up because someone’s gotta take charge of the IM Res brackets. Reach out to the chiefs if you are game to be bracket-master.

Kudos this week to Melanie Cabezas and LaShondra Arnold for fantastic Cohen Conferences and to Allen Witt for a great SAR talk. Other kudos to Chelsea Perfect from the VA PRIME staff for her amazing work for a veteran who had some significant emergent needs, to Aubrie Carroll, Chris Wanjiku and Forrest Gamble from Hannah Dzimitrowicz for bringing it to AM report with some strong ENT knowledge, to Harsh Patolia from Matt Abbott for amazing work at the VA and to JD Davy and Bhavik Patel for helping out with some excellent ICU care, right back to Matt Abbott from Harsh for being a superlative VA JAR, to Maxine Chan from Sunny Chung for taking great care of a sick patient, even drawing all the labs! Also to Carlos Rivera-Pratts, Cindy Pabon, Yuxi Zheng and Jonathan Nahmias (psych intern) from former chief Dr. Caroline Sloan for excellent work at DRH, and to Sunny Chung and Ryan Keane from Dr. Gil Acevedo and to Nathan Hirshman from Dr. Diana Medehint and Dr. Liz Hankollari for excellent care of a very sick patient overnight

From the Residency Office
Symposium on Spirituality, Religion, and Mental Health
On the afternoon of Tuesday, March 16, from 2pm-5pm, most of the Duke psychiatry residents, as well as any interested faculty, trainees, chaplains, or students at Duke, the Durham VA, and Central Regional Hospital, will participate in an afternoon virtual Symposium on Spirituality, Religion, and Mental Health. The event (with schedule embedded in the attached link) will include training on taking a spiritual history, consideration of clinical challenges related to religion and mental health, a panel of local interfaith community leaders, and a panel of health care chaplains. The goal of the event is to promote richer mutual understanding among clinicians, chaplains, and faith leaders, and to explore how this understanding might lead to productive communication and collaboration around patient care.

Advance Care Planning RCT Trial on Inpatient Medicine
Advance Care Planning Notifications in Duke University Hospital General Inpatient Medicine is a cluster randomized controlled trial evaluating the impact of and response to advance care planning notifications to clinicians caring for patients hospitalized with serious illnesses. This is a continuation of the Advance Care Planning (ACP) QI project on Hospital Medicine. In the QI project, clinicians received email and page notifications for patients at high-risk of death in 30 days and 6 months. As part of the study, clinicians will be automatically enrolled and randomized into a control or intervention arm. The intervention arm will receive notifications for patients at high risk of death in 30 days and 6 months. The control arm will not receive notifications. In either arm, clinicians will determine if a patient is appropriate for an ACP discussion. If a discussion is completed, it can be documented in the advance care planning note in the EHR, and a billing code (99497 and 99498) can be applied. All resources, including palliative care consultation, are available at the clinician’s discretion. Participation is voluntary. All trainees at Duke have FREE access to Personal Assistance Services (PAS), which is the faculty/employee assistance program of Duke University. The staff of licensed professionals offer confidential assessment, short-term counseling, and referrals to help resolve a range of personal, work, and family problems. PAS services are available free of charge to Duke faculty and staff, and their immediate family members. An appointment to meet with a PAS counselor may be arranged by calling the PAS office at 919-416-1PAS (919-416-1727), Monday through Friday between 8:00 A.M. and 5:00 P.M.
