From the Director

It’s getting down to the last month of the year! We are almost to June. Please keep an eye out on all the end of the year things – lots of checkboxes, as well as Chief Grand Rounds, end of year Picnic, and more!

Today is the last day to fill out your CulturePulse Survey, so please take the time to do so.

Kudos
Kudos this week go to Kristen Batich for her Chair’s Conference, to Dagmara Danek, Steve Pappas, Taylor Triana, Sarah Norton and Bryan Golubski for completing a half Iron Man (tired just typing this…), to Gil Acevedo from Brian Schneider for his work as ACR, to Mike Murn and Irena Tan from Kara Wegermann for an amazing multi-disciplinary med-surg conference, to Jonathan Reichstein from Amy Steward (8W RN) for outstanding patient-centered care, to Joe Lerman, Kristen Veal, Diana Mosquera, Ben Groves, and MS2 Ethan Srinivasan for amazing work on VA gen med from Kara Wegermann, and also to Michael Noujaim and Ahmad Mourad for their above and beyond cross cover (including tick management), to Michael Burt and Maggie Salinger for their outstanding support in the CCU during a very busy night of activity and codes from Sonali Bracken, to Cameron Oswalt and Ben Groves for receiving gold stars for patient care, and to Michael Grant, Casey Sullivan and Nate Moulton for coming to talk to our fellowship directors and division chiefs. Also MANY thanks to the SARs who covered our JARs for the night of their rising SAR retreat – much much appreciated.

PubMed from the Program
Duke IM is crushing it on the National Meeting Circuit! These are just two of the many presentations – keep your eyes out on Pubmed from the Program as we are way behind in recognition!  This week goes to Chester Kao for his poster presentation at SGIM and to Nancy Yang for her AWARD WINNING poster at DDW!

Have a great week!

Clinic Corner: PRIME

Contributed by Sonal Patel and Leigh J. Wynkoop

Hope you’re reading the 1st of the month clinic update email, which has pertinent info about PRIME and VA that we need to get to you. We would really like you to make time to read this!

PRIME VEC Paul Granchukoff is retiring at the end of this week! Some of you worked directly with him when he was located in the clinic itself when you started residency. He’s planning on spending more time teaching kids hockey. (Did you know he’s a former NHL player?!)

The hallway sign-in white board has magnets for you to use if you are running behind in clinic, so the nurses can make your patients aware that you are delayed. Please try to do that when you pass by it.

As a reminder, if you’re on vacation, etc. please set a surrogate on your team to cover your alerts during that time. Departing SARs, you might want to go ahead and explore with your team who can manage your alerts when you’re gone.

SAR PIV expirations: Check the date to be sure your PIV card will get you through the end of your time here.

Looking forward to closing out the academic year as we prepare for the start of the next. Thanks for all you do for our patients!

From the Residency Office

PWIM Event thank you
Thanks to many residents and fellows for their engagement in our two recent PWIM events, the “Before They Were Stars” panel and our Clipp-Speer visiting professorship with Dr. Victoria Fraser, Chair of Medicine at Washington University. At the BTWS event I was especially inspired by remarks from Dr. Patty Lee (Chief of Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care Medicine) that the leadership of Drs. Klotman and Cooney conveyed that women can lead at the highest levels at Duke.  She additionally discussed her vision for promoting and achieving wellness among faculty, staff and trainees, noting that achieving wellness leads to improved academic success.  We look forward to Dr. Lee’s leadership!  Dr. Fraser delivered an inspiring Grand Rounds in support of the idea that diversity of all kinds in our community leads to improved performance and success for individuals and ultimately for institutions.  I have enjoyed hearing from so many residents and fellows that these messages resonate, and I look forward to continuing to work with many of you to ensure that we all reach our highest potential. - Lisa Criscione-Schreiber, MD, MEd, Chair, Program for Women in Internal Medicine

The Department of Medicine Minority Recruitment and Retention Committee will host "Smart Positioning on the Interview Day and Beyond: Pearls on CVs, Personal Statements, and More," on June 5 from 6:30-8 p.m. in DMP 2W96. Register today.
