From the Director
Happy May! It is a huge week of KUDOS for so many things. Really, celebrating your awesome accomplishments is a huge part of why being PD is the best job ever, so I am happy to spend the next bit of time listing them out!
Please also stop by the office and welcome Kayla Humphreys to our Duke Family! Kayla is our Recruitment Coordinator/Coaching Coordinator, and we are excited to have her join the team!
First, congratulations to Filley Howe and Corbin Cox on the birth of Capen, to Daphne Xiao and Dusty Kiem on the birth of Clara, and to former chief and current GI attending Bonike Olurontoba Sanders and Darryl Sanders on the birth of Deji! Also congratulations to former chief and current Hospital Medicine faculty member Nilesh Patel on his wedding!
We had a fantastic first ever Duke Residency Leadership Council event, welcoming back former residents Chris Cabell (chair), Lia Logio, Van Morris, Jay McDonald and Jamie Whitehouse. Other council members include Chris Woods, Ken Lyles, Paul Klotman and Doug Haden. We are excited for the many initiatives that our Leadership Council will take on, including mentoring and connections for our residents outside of Duke, strengthening our alumni network and advising us on new and exciting residency initiatives. Many thanks to Blue Dean, Lynsey Michnowicz, Ernest McCowan and Elizabeth McCamic for your help in bringing this together and to Dr. Cooney, Dr. Corey and Dr. McNeill for your support of the council!
Also many thanks to Suchita Shah Sata for organizing a “Before They Were Stars” event featuring our new Pulmonary and Critical Care Division Chief Dr. Patty Lee, as well as Dr. Kimberly Johnson (Leader of the REACH Equity Institute) and Dr. Anna Mae Diehl (former Division Chief of Gastroenterology and researcher extraordinaire).
Rising JARs (and rising SARs) – please talk with Sheila Sherzoy, Nancy Yang or Kyle Guerink if you are interested in volunteering next year at our Wednesday evening clinic at Lincoln Community Health Center. It’s a fantastic experience (I had my first precepting in awhile on Wednesday night with the awesome Lauren Sharan and Matt Labriola) and your participation is vital to continuing this community outreach!

Kudos this week go to Joe Plaksin and Brittany Gatta for awesome SAR talks (and sorry Joe for missing your kudos last week), to James Deardorff for a spectacular Chair’s Conference (in front of the Leadership Council), to Chris Pumill from Dr. Ken Goldberg and The VA Team for going the extra mile to notify a patient of critical lab values, to the NF crew of Adrian Randall, Alie Mara, and Alex Sullivan from co-NF’er JD Ike for being an awesome team to work with, to Nadia Yimer from Diana Mosquera for going above and beyond to help other residents with workload while on DOC lead, to Mark Robertshaw from Anmol Singh for being a great MICU call buddy and helping her make it to a family event, and to Lara Hayes for covering Jordan Gales during his resident research presentation.

Feeling down? Need to talk to someone? Opportunities for Wellness
All trainees at Duke have FREE access to Personal Assistance Services (PAS), which is the faculty/employee assistance program of Duke University. The staff of licensed professionals offer confidential assessment, short-term counseling, and referrals to help resolve a range of personal, work, and family problems. PAS services are available free of charge to Duke faculty and staff, and their immediate family members. An appointment to meet with a PAS counselor may be arranged by calling the PAS office at 919-416-1PAS (919-416-1727), Monday through Friday between 8:00 A.M. and 5:00 P.M. For assistance after hours, residents and fellows can call the Blood and Body Fluid Hotline (115 inside DUH, 919-684-1115 outside) for referral to behavioral health resources.
