From the Director
And it’s a residency win! Residents took home the victory in the annual house staff vs. faculty basketball game. Many thanks to Clare Il’Giovine for her awesome photography, and to Lynsey Michnowicz, Joel Boggan and Zach Wegermann for serving as referees! And no major injuries, always a good thing.
Lots of other fun to be had – thanks to Nancy Yang for organizing the Duke Chapel Climb, and to Jess Regan and friends for organizing the Stead Dim Sum night. We also had a fantastic noon conference from Dr. Redonda Miller, the PWIM Clipp-Speer visiting professor. If you didn’t have a chance to see her grand rounds or her noon conference, they are BOTH worth your time to watch online.
Kudos
Kudos this week go to Irena Tan from Matt Tucker for being very helpful with some sick patients overnight, to Matt Labriola for his fantastic chair’s conference (and stepping up to move to Tuesday to accommodate Dr. Miller’s noon conference), and to Azalea Kim for her awesome SAR talk. Kudos to Godefroy Chery from Eric Wei for going above and beyond to help a patient and family and to Nicole Pristera from Bryan Golubski for her leadership as a VA Gen Med JAR. Congratulations to Leah Machen on winning the first annual GIM Resident Research award! And a belated congratulations to Taylor Triana on her wedding!

Clinic Corner: DOC
Contributed by Lynn Bowlby
Just wanted to remind everyone of the clinic workflow around dementia/cognitive impairment/memory disorders. The CMAs can do a mini-cog, as a pre-screener, and if needed, I (and Elissa, after she rejoins us the last week in May) can do a MoCA. Please review. Start with the Screening Workflow, then move to the workflow for those with identified cognitive impairment. Please let me know if you have questions! - Jan Dillard

Resident Wellness Initiative Grants
Resident Wellness Initiative Grants for resident-led, innovative projects are dedicated to promote the well-being of our residents, which is of utmost importance to our Program.
The proposed initiatives may be designed to promote resident physician wellness by building skills to handle the challenges and the pace of the current healthcare environment, while continuing to provide quality care to patients.
- Two awards each $2,500/project will be funded
- Funding start date is July 1, 2018
- Each proposal must be led by one or more SARs (current JARs) during the 2018-2019 academic year. Extension of funding may be requested next year beyond June 30, 2019
- Teamwork is encouraged to include rising JARs and incoming interns. Multiple SARs may lead one project
- Faculty sponsor/advisor may be recruited but not required
- Additional funding for a larger award may be available depending on the level of interest and budgets of the project(s). The award committee will review and make a decision on each proposal.
- The 2-page proposals are due on June 1, 2018 for review by an award selection committee
- Applications forms are attached.
