Internal Medicine Residency News, Nov. 18, 2019

From the Director

First, many thanks to Chris Hostler and Steven Pappas for a tremendous Medicine Grand Rounds – thank you is certainly not adequate to express what your service and leadership means to all of us.

We are keeping up with a busy recruitment season! Many thanks to all who are talking with the applicants throughout the day, rounding with the applicants during gen med and MICU, and being such great participants in conferences. Kudos to Vinay Choksi for presenting at Monday report, to Soo Lim for an awesome Chair’s conference, to our My Take residents (Taylor Triana, Marius Chukwurah, James Helzberg, Neesha Nama, Callie Berkowitz and Dennis Narcisse).  Thank you to Sheila Sherzoy, Matt Harbrecht, Madhu Eluri and Nick Kamp for leading tours. Apologies in advance if I missed a tour guide!

Kudos
Other kudos this week go to Anthony Horton, Ryan Slauer, and Vinay Choksi for excellent patient care at the VA from Dr. Schneider, a belated kudos to Kathryn Hutchins for her SAR talk, to Mike Noujaim for his SAR talk, to our Chair’s conference basketball ticket winners Callie Berkowitz and Bhavik Patel. Kudos to our chief Amanda Boyd for winning the Most Outstanding Poster Award at the recent American College of Gastroenterology meeting!

PubMed from the Program
This week’s pubmed from the program goes to Mary-Jo Obeid for her poster presentation at the current American Heart Association meeting Impact of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease in Heart Failure with Preserved Ejection Fraction.

Have a great week!

The next quarterly service of remembrance for DVAHCS Veterans who have recently died will be Dec. 10 at 4:00 in the Chapel. If you know a Veteran who has passed away in the last quarter (before approx. Dec. 1) and would like to attend this ceremony, to which family members are invited, you are welcome.

Please complete your continuity clinic survey in MedHub – we pore over the data we get to find ways to improve PRIME Clinic’s learning environment for you.

Feel free to sign the “Stand Up to Stop Harassment” poster which is on the hallway wall. Please report any inappropriate behavior, and intervene if you feel it is appropriate. We are all here to support staff, fellow residents, and Veterans.

Great DVAHCS video “Call It Out: Responding to Mistreatment or Harassment."

We’re heading into the home stretch of finishing out the first half of the year – interns, you’re starting to hit your stride in clinic! Please be sure to ask questions if you are stuck or don’t know what to do next or don’t know where to find an order. We are all always learning!

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!

Duke Med-Peds at City of Oaks raceMed-Peds participates in advocacy event
The Duke Med-Peds program participated in its first ever joint NC Med-Peds Residency Program advocacy event, joining the UNC and ECU med-peds programs in a running race in early November. Runners from all three programs ran either the 5K, 10K, or half-marathon in the City of Oaks race. Collaboratively, the programs raised $1,225 for the CF Foundation. Everyone had a great time and are looking forward to making this an annual event - Jane Trinh, MD.
