From the Director

Happy Thanksgiving to all! We are looking forward to the upcoming Turkey Bowl on Thursday, as well as our #dukefamily Thanksgiving lunch afterwards.  

For all that have “Friendsgivings” planned, please be sure to send us your pictures! For those who are going to be with family and friends outside of Durham, safe travels and our best to you and your families this Thanksgiving!

Last week marked our first week of the new “CPC” (Cake Pops and Coffee with Dr. Cooney) on Monday afternoon for the ‘protected’ gen med teams. What a great idea - looking forward to this new tradition! Thanks also to all that attended the PWIM “Before They Were Stars” event featuring Dr. Cooney!

Kudos this week go to our tour guides from last week Linsdey Shantzer, Steph Garbarino, Tara Holder, Todd Trophy, Matt Labriola, Jess Regan, Sheila Sherzoy, Manisha Bhattacharya and JVK! Also to our awesome my take teams of Matt Labriola, Jeremy Brooksbank, Marius Chukwurah, Sonali Bracken, and Sara Coles. A fantastic resident report from Sarah Norton, as well as SAR talks from Matt Labriola and Mike Grant and an excellent chair’s conference (first ever on crutches) by Nancy Yang!

Kudos also to Caitlin Driscoll from Winn Seay for handling a very challenging situation at the DOC, to Nancy Yang and Anmol Singh from JP Shoup for being great colleagues, to Sara Coles from Bryan Golubski for staying quite a bit late on a Saturday night to help stabilize several 9100 patients, from Francis Ugowe to Chris Pumill for being an awesome VA-unit call buddy and helping out with a tough MICU code, from Tessa Genders to Tara Holder and Stephanie Garbarino for their help in the VA CCU this week — amazing teamwork to take care of very sick patients — to Mike Grant from Brian Schneider for his excellent ACR work and to David Elliott from a medical student for being “the example of the type of resident I want to be."

This week’s pubmed from the program goes to Kent Feng for his abstract "Strategies for Improving the Care of Patients Hospitalized with Heart Failure: Baseline Data from the CONNECT-HF Trial" accepted to the AHA!

We are really excited for all the end of year festivities, from the Toy Drive to the No-Shave November (don’t forget to support your colleagues!) to the Turkey Bowl to the Holiday Party. Hopefully ugly sweater day works its way in there, as well, as we all get ready to move into 2019!

Clinic Corner: PRIME

We really appreciate the feedback of those who filled out the continuity clinic survey for PRIME and those who showed up to the town hall on Nov. 14.  We have two more town halls to go and hope to get lots more feedback from you about things we can do to make PRIME a top-notch learning environment for you.

We had students from NC State in clinic for a day to do a clinic flow study. Thank you to those residents who were here that day and participated in collecting that data for them. We’ll be getting their results soon so we can figure out where our patients’ visits can be optimized time-wise.

As we starting thinking about the holidays, please be sure you have alert coverage arranged among your team if you are going to be away or unavailable on inpatient service.

PRIME has a new Program Support Assistant, Tina Dempsey. Tina will be building your appointment schedules in clinic, dealing with clinic pulls, and serving as all-around admin troubleshooter. We’re thrilled to have her on board! You might see her name on communications with you or with your patients.

We also have two new VECs at the front desk: Porsche Lewis and Michelle Dunston. They are huge assets to the clinic and again we are thrilled to have them here.

Shingrix is going to be arriving in the near future so it doesn’t hurt to ask about the status of that when you’re in clinic.

Our LEAD residents have been scrubbing their patient panels and have found it immensely therapeutic to clean up patients’ problem lists. If you have a no-show, consider taking a few minutes to go to the PROBLEMS tab, right click, and either INACTIVATE redundant, outdated, or boring problems (“pes planus”), or CHANGE to update ICD9 codes to ICD10.

Having just celebrated the 100 year mark of the ending of World War I and Veterans Day, and as we head into Thanksgiving, we are grateful for all you do to provide care to our nation’s Veterans.

Research Opportunities

The portal is open for the 14th Annual Duke Health Quality & Safety Conference. Abstract submissions are due Mon., Nov. 26, 2018 by 5 p.m. Abstracts accepted will be notified by Fri., Dec. 21, 2018. Please share the abstract submission portal site with your teams:  http://bit.ly/2019abstractsubmit

The deadline for submitting an abstract for the NC Chapter of ACP is Dec. 15, 2018. The meeting will be held in Raleigh, Feb. 22-23, 2019. Scholarly activity can be in clinical research, basic research, clinical vignette, quality improvement and high value care. Learn more.

Duke Department of Medicine is accepting applications for the R38 Research Pathway for categorical internal medicine residents committed to a career as a physician-investigator in academic medicine. Applications are due Dec. 10, 2018. See details in email.

Advocacy in Clinical Leadership Track
We are pleased to share an opportunity to participate in the Advocacy in Clinical Leadership Track (ACLT). The ACLT does not change the duration or nature of your training - it lines up ambulatory time for 12 weeks out of the year for JARs and SARs and uses one half day per week to share a curriculum in health policy and advocacy, medical education, and leadership skills.

Residents will form their own advocacy platform and deliver it in person with legislators at both the state and national levels in alternate years. Past projects selected by the residents have addressed opioid policy, drug pricing, and food insecurity, as examples. ACLT residents will also have opportunities to teach morning report and academic half day sessions with observation and feedback.

In addition, ACLT residents lead GIM Journal Club while they are on block. Please note that the ACLT may conflict with some +2 schedule requests and other opportunities in the residency program. Feel free to contact Daniella Zipkin and the chiefs with specific questions. Deadline to apply is Jan. 4, 2019.

All trainees at Duke have FREE access to Personal Assistance Services (PAS), which is the faculty/employee assistance program of Duke University. The staff of licensed professionals offer confidential assessment, short-term counseling, and referrals to help resolve a range of personal, work, and family problems. PAS services are available free of charge to Duke faculty and staff, and their immediate family members. An appointment to meet with a PAS counselor may be arranged by calling the PAS office at 919-416-1PAS (919-416-1727), Monday through Friday between 8:00 A.M. and 5:00 P.M. For assistance after hours, residents and fellows can call the Blood and Body Fluid Hotline (115 inside DUH, 919-684-1115 outside) for referral to behavioral health resources. Another resource is Duke Outpatient Psychiatry Referrals at (919) 684-0100 or 1-888-ASK-DUKE. https://www.hr.duke.edu/pas/
