This weeks pubmed from the program goes to our latest AASLD Emerging Liver Scholar, Dr. Rabab Ali! She has two publications, one in the journal Hepatology "APECED-Associated Hepatitis: Clinical, Biochemical, Histological and Treatment Data from a Large Predominantly American Cohort," and the second one is as a first author in Digestive Diseases and Sciences, "Exploring the Link Between Platelet Numbers and Vascular Homeostasis Across Early and Late Stages of Fibrosis in Hepatitis C." Plus, her abstract is one of those selected as part of the best of the Liver Meeting 2020! Wow!!

The DOC will be returning to a large proportion of patient care visits as Telehealth, either phone or video. Please see the email from Dani Zipkin from Friday, November 20, with guidelines for conducting these visits in clinic. Please read, even if you’re already comfortable doing them!! There are some details on workflow. Thank you for taking care of our DOC population during the challenges of COVID.
Attention Categorical and Medicine-Psychiatry Interns!! Introducing the Advocacy in Clinical Leadership Track
Founded in 2012, the ACLT is an elective track for second and third year residents which focuses on health policy and advocacy. Residents come together during twelve weeks per year during ambulatory clinical time, with weekly academic seminars on Friday afternoons. Participating in the ACLT does not change the length of training, though it may conflict with some other elective opportunities. The curriculum includes:
- Advocacy and health policy seminars given by faculty in government relations and health policy throughout the year, covering topics such as the legislative process, public health insurance structure, health finance, policy regarding social drivers, how to make a pitch, and more.
- Advocacy trip in the spring to either Washington DC or Raleigh, NC, alternating years. Residents create a platform based on issues they wish to address as a group and meet directly with lawmakers at the state and national level to present their views.
- Seminars in leadership and career planning

Duke SCI-StARR Pathway
The Duke SCI-StARR pathway (Science Clinician Investigator - Stimulating Access to Research in Residency) supports protected time funded by an R38 award for research for residents in the Departments of Medicine who are committed to a career as a physician investigator in academic medicine. All Residents in the R38 SCI-StARR program will have a primary research mentor in either laboratory-based basic science research or clinical research. In addition, a Scholarship Oversight Committee (SOC) will meet with each resident in the program at least twice per year and help the trainee create an individualized development plan. Application Deadline: Nov. 30, 2020.
Stead Tread 5K Walk/Run goes virtual
The Stead Tread is a 5K (3.1 mile) Run/Walk organized by the Internal Medicine Residency Program at Duke University Medical Center. All proceeds benefit the Lincoln Community Health Center, a clinic dedicated to meeting the health care needs of medically underserved patients in Durham. Register today. Duke Primary Care Transformation Fellowship
The Duke Department of Family Medicine and Community Health is accepting applications to fill the third cohort of its two-year Primary Care Transformation Fellowship. The goal of the fellowship is to train physicians and physician assistants to lead health care transformation and improve health within their communities and community-based practice settings. All trainees at Duke have FREE access to Personal Assistance Services (PAS), which is the faculty/employee assistance program of Duke University. The staff of licensed professionals offer confidential assessment, short-term counseling, and referrals to help resolve a range of personal, work, and family problems. PAS services are available free of charge to Duke faculty and staff, and their immediate family members. An appointment to meet with a PAS counselor may be arranged by calling the PAS office at 919-416-1PAS (919-416-1727), Monday through Friday between 8:00 A.M. and 5:00 P.M. For assistance after hours, residents and fellows can call the Blood and Body Fluid Hotline (115 inside DUH, 919-684-1115 outside) for referral to behavioral health resources.
