From the Director

We hope you all had a chance to enjoy some time with family and friends this Thanksgiving. The many “Friendsgiving” celebrations were great to hear about, and Turkey Bowl was an epic one for the ages.  Seriously the best turnout of spectators, including the very first (but not last) tailgating! Great athleticism and sportsmanship on the field, and the refs were pretty good as well (a huge thank you to Drs. Corey, Cohen and Butterly for donning the stripes and excellent refereeing). ICYMI, the Jets were victorious and the Cohen Cup will have to restart it’s Instagram posting from various places at the VA. Until next year, anyway!

Many many thanks to those who helped out with the festivities, including fellows, attendings and residents who covered colleagues so they could go to the game (Sarah Goldstein, Joel Boggan, and many more that I am not aware of), to Anderson Shore (and Kerri!) for being the official photographer, to Anton arranging coverage from Duke Magazine, and to the faculty, fellows, families and friends who spent part of their Thanksgiving watching a bunch of residents have a really great time playing some excellent football. And a huge thank you to our awesome chiefs for getting everyone ready for the game, for getting the post-game food and for generally just outstanding leadership.

We are starting the semi-annual evaluations this week.  Thanks to all who have filled out the pre-meeting qualtrics so far. There are a few with no name so if you don’t remember putting your name on your entry, please re-do! We will send you a reminder before your meeting if we don’t have an entry from you.

Kudos

Kudos this week to Matt Labriola from Sam Linder for sending some articles to the gen med team while he was on endocrine consults, to our Monday My Take team of Madhu Eluri, Adam Brock, and Meg Dupuis and our tour guides Zach Il’Giovine, Luke Cerbin, Robert Diep, and Nathan Moulton​. And kudos to Francis Ugowe from Megan Dupuis for being an amazing night float, and coming in early to let the team go home on Thanksgiving.

2018 Duke Health Annual Quality and Safety Call for Abstracts

All interested Duke Health and Duke affiliated health care professionals, including GME trainees and Duke Health professions students, are invited tosubmit projects for the poster session. 

The deadline for all abstract submissions is Mon., Nov. 27, 2017 by 5 p.m.

Faculty-Resident Research Grant

The applications are due on April 8, 2018 for a funding start date on July 1, 2018.

For JARs, the funding end date is June 30, 2019. For Interns, the funding end date is June 30, 2020.

Attached please find the application forms, instructions, and sample NIH format biosketch (the old NIH Bioskecth format forms are acceptable for your CV)

Please submit your application as a single word or pdf file that includes your mentor’s NIH Biosketch (the new versus old NIH Biosketch format is optional for your mentor).

Please email a pdf file of the signed mentor's support letter with your application by April 9, either as part of the entire application or separately.

Each proposal must have a Human subjects section that describes the protections of the patients and patient data, describe the consent procedure if applicable, status of IRB protocol (to be submitted, already submitted or already approved, as appropriate) etc. This section is required whether to not your project is a retrospective or prospective study, whether patient identifiers are exposed (or not) during data collection/analysis, whether consent is to be obtained or there is a waiver for consent. Please see attached example language that you can adapt to your own specific protocol after discussing with your research mentor.

The next opportunity to apply for a research grant will be in September 2018. Please also find attached scholarship opportunity calendar for this academic year 2017-2018

All trainees at Duke have FREE access to Personal Assistance Services (PAS), which is the faculty/employee assistance program of Duke University. The staff of licensed professionals offer confidential assessment, short-term counseling, and referrals to help resolve a range of personal, work, and family problems. PAS services are available free of charge to Duke faculty and staff, and their immediate family members.
