From the Director

I hope everyone had a chance to enjoy some of the Thanksgiving weekend.  Many thanks to Tia for ordering our Thanksgiving dinner and to Jenny and Bill for putting away the leftovers so the night teams could eat as well. All told (save one hand), the Turkey Bowl was a big success.  Even bigger for the Marines (sorry Jets) who were able to return the Cohen Cup to the Duke side of Erwin Road. Look for the Cohen Cup’s Instagram account to have some new pics as the Marines celebrate a victory, led by QB Peter Hu, double touchdown Kara Wegermann and “Pick Six” Nick Shelburne.

Thank you to Luke Gatta for his amazing sports photography at Turkey Bowl, to our Refs Dave Butterly, Don Heglund and Harvey Cohen and to our coaches Tony G and Ryan Schulteis.

We have a break from IM interviews this week (Med Peds on Wednesday!), but look forward to a return to interviewing next Monday.  Thanks to Corey Bradley, Jenny Van Kirk and AJ Blood for doing My Take last Monday, as well as to our tour guides Lauren Sharan, Megan Gillum, Kavisha Singh, Phil Liu, Juan Sanchez, Alison Vasan, Div Patel, Rachel Feder, Jenny Van Kirk, Kahli Zietlow, Bill McManigle; and to Rachel Feder for a fantastic resident report with the applicants.

Kudos

Kudos this week to Steph Garbarino from Pascale Khairallah for compassionate patient care on 9100 nights … to Zach Wegermann and Jenny Van Kirk from Kara Wegermann for helping out over the weekend … to all attendings and co-residents who let people out for Turkey Bowl … to Pavle Mulotinovic from Joe Brogan for staying late to help with some very sick patients on the procedure service … and to David Beavers, Helen Zhang and Adam Banks from Filley Howe for their help on VA Gen Med.

Before we know it, it will be DECEMBER.  Please make sure you have met with your advisor before the end of 2016. If you are having trouble meeting up, please let Madi and me know and we will help you get this scheduled. Thanks in advance to anyone scheduled to help out with the CLER visit; please let me and the chiefs know if coverage is needed so that you can attend any meeting you are asked to attend.

PubMed from the Program

This week’s highlight goes to AJ Blood for his poster at the recent AHA meeting: "Early Change in Right Ventricular Function Assessed Echocardiographically Predicts Up to 17 Year Survival in Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension"; Alexander J Blood, Kishan Parikh, Thomas M Bashore, Richard A Krasuski.

Have a great week!

Clinic Corner: Ambulatory Care

Contributed by Dani Zipkin, MD

We Follow Up: Reminder to all residents at all continuity clinic sites – if you order a test or image or procedure in clinic, you are expected to follow it up.

  1. Respond to your in-basket or CPRS alerts whenever possible (ask Dani for help streamlining on the Maestro side).
  2. If you have a clinic week followed by a tough rotation, please arrange for the follow up on your patients. Instead of going over duty hours, please recruit the care team involved to help – contact the attending you signed out with and discuss what’s needed.

Professionalism does not mean exceeding duty hours and doing everything yourself – it means recruiting your team to help you meet patient care needs when they arise. Attendings will be reminded to expect to hear from you. As always, let Dani and Aparna know if you run into any issues. Thanks!!

Clinic Faxes in MedRes: Please also remember that if you receive scanned clinic requests from Tia that were faxed to MedRes, you can forward them to your clinic nurse to they go through the regular clinic queu.

Seeking your opinion about PEAC!: JARs and SARs will remember the PEAC curriculum from last year. If we brought it back with more freedom of choice between topics, and asked residents to complete one per month on average, how would that feel? Please contact Dani Zipkin to share your thoughts on PEAC or any other curriculum suggestions. Thanks!!

Reminder, Ambulatory Care Leadership Track applications due December 31; contact Dani if you didn’t already receive this info!

PAS services are available free of charge to Duke faculty and staff, and their immediate family members. An appointment to meet with a PAS counselor may be arranged by calling the PAS office at 919-416-1PAS (919-416-1727), Monday through Friday between 8:00 A.M. and 5:00 P.M. For assistance after hours, residents and fellows can call the Blood and Body Fluid Hotline (115 inside DUH, 919-684-1115 outside) for referral to behavioral health resources. Another resource is Duke Outpatient Psychiatry Referrals at (919) 684-0100 or 1-888-ASK-DUKE. https://www.hr.duke.edu/pas/
