From the Director

Happy October! It is almost fall weather, Doctoberfest starts today, the Browns (yes, we are a family of Cleveland Browns fans. It’s Dave’s fault) managed to somehow lose in overtime, and daylight is getting just a little bit shorter. We had a great week, with noon conference packed with nephrology learning (plus a MKSAP GI) and ended the week with THE BEST STEAD TREAD EVAH!!

Kudos

Kudos this week go to our Stead Tread team, led by Kempner Society fearless leader Juliessa Pavon. Resident leads include Daniel Turner, Anmol Singh, Marge DeOliviera, Jessie Gu, Jordan Gales and his fiancé Audrey Vonck. Med Res Alum, current GIM fellow and future DRH/Amb Chief Caroline Sloan stepped in to help out as well, using her expertise from leading past Stead Treads. Fantastic representation from the LCHC Community, the residency, hospital medicine, GIM, Rheumatology, and the Department of Dermatology to name a few. I don’t have all the details yet, but Pickett Road Clinic Lead (and Duke IM Res alum) Jeff Clough won the whole thing, and I think that Kyle Guerink and Sarah Norton were the fastest residents. Overall, there were >200 participants and early totals suggest we raised more than $10,000 for Lincoln Community Health Center. Just an absolutely fantastic job by our Kempner Society team to make this happen.

More kudos to Kyle Guerink for a fantastic chair’s conference, to Michael Burt from Gil Acevedo for great work overnight on 9100, to Adam Brock and Nick Shelburne from Lynn Bowlby for great work as DRH GM SARs, to Brittany Gatta, Marius Chukwurah, Tanmay Gokhale and Peter Kussin from Valerie and 1010 NP group for being extremely gracious and easy to work with, to Lara Hayes for following up on a complex primary care patient, and to Dagmara Danek from Tara Holder for tremendous gen med enthusiasm and outstanding work on Duke Gen Med. Kudos as well to Tamara Saint-Surin (along with pediatrics resident Shaunte McKay) for starting and chairing the GME Minority Housestaff Council, and selecting Shaki Salvador and Marius Chukwurah as our recruitment reps!  We are excited to work with you on recruiting this year.

PubMed from the Program

This week’s pubmed from the program goes to current intern Sean Chen for his recent lead author publication "Impact of polyvascular disease on patients with atrial fibrillation: Insights from ROCKET AF." American Heart Journal. Volume 200, June 2018, Pages 102-109 as well as his paper with lead author Duke IM Alum Julia Xu, "Clinical and Metabolomic Rick Factors Associated with Rapid Renal Function Decline in Sickle Cell Disease," published in the American Journal of Hematology!

Clinic Corner: Ambulatory

The ACLT Gets a Makeover!
We are proud to announce that the Ambulatory Care Leadership Track is being RENAMED to the Advocacy in Clinical Leadership Track! Recognizing that an interest in health policy and advocacy is not specific to any clinical pathway in medicine, we’d like to welcome all interns interested in general medicine or subspecialties who wish to improve their knowledge and skills in health policy to apply to the ACLT elective track for next year.

Founded in 2012, the ACLT is an elective track for second and third year residents which focuses on advocacy, leadership, and education. Residents come together during twelve weeks per year during ambulatory clinical time, with weekly academic seminars, including:

  • Advocacy and health policy seminars given by faculty in government relations and health policy throughout the year, with an advocacy trip in the spring to either Washington DC or Raleigh, NC, alternating years. Residents create a platform based on issues they wish to address as a group and meet directly with lawmakers at the state and national level to present their views.
  • Seminars in leadership and career planning
  • Curricula in teaching and opportunities for small group teaching as a senior resident, with direct observation and feedback
  • Each block also includes General Internal Medicine Journal Club, presented by residents with support from EBM teaching faculty.

Ambulatory Thread Evaluations
Most categorical interns and JARs have begun to receive evaluation forms for their +2 ambulatory thread blocks. Please note: Evaluations are connected to the rotation, and therefore will pop up EACH time you are on block. The evaluation was worded in such a way that we asked for you to share feedback on faculty you’ve worked with 4 or more times, thinking initially that the evaluations would be batched every few months. Please ignore the 4 clinic requirement and share any feedback, positive or constructive, on any attendings you’ve worked with twice or more.

Feeling down? Need to talk to someone? Opportunities for Wellness
All trainees at Duke have FREE access to Personal Assistance Services (PAS), which is the faculty/employee assistance program of Duke University. The staff of licensed professionals offer confidential assessment, short-term counseling, and referrals to help resolve a range of personal, work, and family problems. PAS services are available free of charge to Duke faculty and staff, and their immediate family members. An appointment to meet with a PAS counselor may be arranged by calling the PAS office at 919-416-1PAS (919-416-1727), Monday through Friday between 8:00 A.M. and 5:00 P.M. For assistance after hours, residents and fellows can call the Blood and Body Fluid Hotline (115 inside DUH, 919-684-1115 outside) for referral to behavioral health resources. Another resource is Duke Outpatient Psychiatry Referrals at (919) 684-0100 or 1-888-ASK-DUKE. https://www.hr.duke.edu/pas/
