Internal Medicine Residency News, Oct. 12, 2020

From the Director

Happy Monday! We had our first of the four socially distanced intern mini-retreats on Friday – beautiful weather and great discussions, plus reflection time in the Duke Gardens. Many thanks to Duke Gardens for offering hosted well-being visits, to the Chiefs, Dr. Butterly, Dr. Boggan and Dr. Hargett for facilitating. See group 2 on Friday.

Recruitment starts in less than a month! We look forward to your awesome participation! We will go over the calendar and plans with you at an upcoming “Bite Sized Updates” before  noon conference. Thanks in advance for helping us recruit an amazing class of new interns.

ARE YOU A DOC RESIDENT???? Take time to complete your colorectal cancer screening survey (project by your colleagues Melanie Cabezas and Aaron  Hein, mentored by Dr. Boggan). The survey closes Oct. 16, and here's the link (there's a chance for a $50 gift card as part of participating).

Kudos
Kudos this week go to Megan Barrett for being an awesome co-intern and Maggie Salinger for being a great SAR from Komal Safdar, to Tyler Couch from Dr. Diehl for outstanding patient communication on 9100, to Brittany Chapman for a superb Cohen Conference and AM report, to Sukrit Jain for getting the diagnosis, to Maxine Chan from Bari Rosenberg for delivering her Patagonia vest, to Amanda Broderick for going above and beyond to help a patient (from Olivia Jew) and Courtney Dominguez for bringing in cake for Amanda’s birthday. Great job everyone! Keep up the #pumpkinspicetacos for Doctoberfest.

Additional kudos to Joanna Cavalier for her poster presentations at Triangle SHM  and Duke Research Week!  Cavalier JS, Goldstein B, O’Brien C, Zhao C, Bedoya A. Call for applications: UNC Addiction Medicine Fellowship
The UNC Addiction Medicine Fellowship was founded in 2018 and received ACGME accreditation in April 2019. The fellowship is supported by both the NC Department of Human and Health Services (NC DHHS) and the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to train 8 Addiction Medicine physicians annually. The vision of the UNC Addiction Medicine Fellowship is to expand capacity for addiction treatment in North Carolina, with emphasis on training physicians in team-based care with an understanding of how to provide high quality addiction treatment to underserved populations. The fellowship is designed to prepare graduates for careers in community-based or academic Addiction Medicine and provides training in team-based care in multiple settings, including detox, pain management, inpatient consults, UNC Horizons (a residential substance use program for pregnant and parenting women), and outpatient treatment.  New in 2020, fellows will have a community-telehealth rotation, where they will train at one of five FQHC partnering training sites, providing addiction treatment in community based settings with significant need for OUD treatment. Learn more.

The UNC Addiction Medicine fellowship is currently accepting applications through ERAS for the 2021-2022 academic year.

Feeling down? Need to talk to someone? Opportunities for Wellness
All trainees at Duke have FREE access to Personal Assistance Services (PAS), which is the faculty/employee assistance program of Duke University. The staff of licensed professionals offer confidential assessment, short-term counseling, and referrals to help resolve a range of personal, work, and family problems. PAS services are available free of charge to Duke faculty and staff, and their immediate family members.
