From the Director
Happy Mid-Doctoberfest! Hope everyone had a chance to enjoy one of the two beautiful days this past weekend. We’ve got lots more fun to have during “Doctober” and are rapidly gearing up for recruitment! Thanks in advance to those who have signed up for our events, including tours, “My Take” and dinners, and to faculty who have signed up to interview.
We had a great time at our home on Friday, and many thanks to Kerri and Lynsey for your hard work, and also to Eileen Maziarz for organizing the first Kickball event of Duke IM! Thank you to Dr. and Mrs. Rogers for hosting a wonderful evening for interns and JARs with departmental leadership.
Kudos
Many kudos to be had this week: to Sarah Nouri for a fantastic SAR talk on VTE, to Maryann Oyasande for her awesome chair’s conference, to Michelle Mitchell and Kristen Batich from Tanya Aylward for excellent work on Gen Med, to Kathryn Hutchins from Kent Feng for her great work as the DRH night intern, to Sean Doerfler, Chidi Egwim, and Josh Lee from Daphne Xiao for being outstanding ‘first responders’ to an RRT on her gen med patient, and to Brittany Gatta from Daphne Xiao for her tremendous leadership as a VA JAR during some tough situations, to Caroline Sloan from Dr. Paul Zimmerman for her quick thinking and first response to a patient in distress, to Dan Turner and Matt Labriola from Kathryn Hutchins and Divya Natesan for letting them come to the party for a few hours on long call, to Sarah Norton and Shannon Niedermeyer from Dan Turner for excellent cross cover help, to Nancy Yang from Shaki Salvador for “putting the family in #Dukefamily” to help out, and to the chiefs from Shaki Salvador for their help last week, and to the many members of the #Dukefamily who were there for Caroline Sloan this past week during a family member’s illness. Kudos to to Adrian Randall from Shannon Niedermeyer and Sarah Norton for being a fantastic intern-for-the day on VA gen med and to Kudos to Govind Krishnan for running a difficult code with composure in the MICU and Casey Sullivan for handling a tough call in MICU with style and grace. WOW! You guys are amazing.
Congratulations to Jeremy Cypen and Sanja Galeb on their wedding this past weekend! A great turnout of residents to celebrate with you all – we are very happy for you!

Have a great week!

Clinic Corner: Pickett Road
Contributed by Sharon Rubin
Pickett Road has been seeing many new welcome faces. We have our two new attendings, Dr. Nastassia Shaw and Dr. Robert Hutchins who have started to fill the void of 3 prior providers. More patients are being seen and there is more availability all around for patients to see their providers and not be seen in resident clinic. We have new CMAs and LPNs that are training and getting on the floor so the clinic has more staff and help for our patients. We restarted our committees, Patient Satisfaction, Patient Experience and Work Culture and we have seen when the clinic works together, better events and outcomes occur. Due to the efforts of Dr. Peyser we have doubled our education with 2 CME lectures a month in addition to our MKSAP Tuesdays. We enjoy having our residents come and join use for discussion on Lipid management with Dr. Guyton or Travel medicine with Dr. Stout. Dr. Katie Charles participated in our first LEAD week experience on the wards with first year medical students and how to interview a patient. Our focus for ambulatory education, due to feedback from the residents, will be on musculoskeletal learning and focus on dermatology (biopsy and identifying skin lesions).
