From the Director

It’s We Care Week! What is that? A 5-year tradition here, where we give up our resident lunches during a week of Doctoberfest and donate the funds to a charity of the residents' choice! Voting is underway, and we look forward to announcing the winning charitable organization at the end of the week. Other continued Doctoberfest fun will happen, including a few more trivia questions, the Pure Barre class with Kerri, and the ResCo Halloween Party on Friday. Hard to believe that Doctoberfest ends next week, with our fun lunch in the courtyard, and the first recruitment day (prelim recruitment!) on Oct. 31!

The first annual night float/night resident potluck was a fantastic hit! Many many thanks to all who contributed, and to Erin for organizing. We will be sending out the representation of the chiefs' spirit animals (thanks Melodi Whitley, Sheila Sherzoy and Tamara Saint-Surin for your winning entry into that part of the night resident activities!)

Kudos this week go to Katie Charles and Matt Tucker from Brian Schneider for their "attending-like" work on VA GM Hospitalist, to Jared Lowe from Nicole Pristera for his outstanding help on VA Gen Med, to Anthony Horton from Nicole Pristera for excellent teamwork at the VA, to Josh Lee for fantastic work and outstanding teaching as the VA Dayfloat from Chidi Egwim, to Sean Doerfler for excellent bedside manner and awesome work on VA Gen Med, to Luke Cerbin for his really great SAR talk on Valvular Heart Disease, and to Lara Kapp for receiving a gold star from one of her patients! Kudos to Nancy Yang for jumping in to help a fellow resident when the need arose, to David Sterken for being an outstanding dayfloat at DRH, and to Irena Tan for stepping into SAR shoes to cover DRH call so a colleague could get to an interview - all from Dani Zipkin. Kudos to Michelle Mitchell and Kristen Batich from Tanya Aylward for their hard work and positive attitude in caring for 58 patients in two weeks on a bustling Duke Gen Med service!

Congratulations to our beloved Duke Chief Jason Zhu and (residency program alum and endocrine fellow extraordinare) Adva Eisenberg on their wedding this weekend!

Also congratulations from the IM Program to Colby Feeney who has recently taken the position of Associate Program Director for the Medicine Pediatrics Program!

And congratulations to Nathan Moulton and his wife on the birth of Elizabeth Moulton last week!

We hope everyone was able to enjoy a special grand rounds honoring one of the true legends of Duke Medicine, former Chair Dr. Joseph Greenfield on Friday. Many thanks to Drs. Joseph Rogers, Ralph Corey and Peter Kussin for organizing a well deserved celebration of Dr. Greenfield.

As we move into November and December, please take the time to meet with both your advisor if you haven’t already, as well as to grab a cup of coffee with your coach! It’s a good time to start talking about schedule requests for next year (the forms are released right before the holidays), and to reflect on the first part of the year, whether you are an intern, JAR or SAR. ITE scores will be back this week for those who took the exam, and your advisor (or me) will be prepared to discuss them with you.

Clinic Corner: PRIME

Hi everyone,

Starting Oct. 30, Susan Bullard is transitioning to pharmacy leadership and our new clinic pharmacist will be Alicia Watkins. Please send all pharmacy-related alerts to Alicia effective Oct. 30. Susan has worked in PRIME for over 20 years (since its inception!) and while we hate to see her go, congrats to her on her new position. And we’ll still see her around!

Just some pointers for your clinic
Optimizing clinic flow: When you arrive for clinic, be sure to open Skype and leave on green. Your patient intake sheets are in your mailbox when your patient is fully checked in – don’t forget those as you need to give your patient their updated med lists upon leaving!  We’re having some hiccups with MD/nurse exits; please be sure to put your papers in the proper box and have the patient wait in the lobby if they need to see a nurse (don’t just deliver them to an LPN room even if it looks available). Remember all patients with new antibiotic prescriptions need to see a nurse before departing. For no-shows, please write a no-show note and tag your VEC to get the patient rescheduled.

Hopefully your remote access is working.  If not, please contact Karen Higgins to troubleshoot.

Also hopefully you all now have access to the NC CSRS (controlled substance) database.  If you have applied and still do not have access, let us know.

Thanks to our clinic LEADs for helping out with our clinics during the busy fellowship interview season and for those who picked up a stray off-team patient.  We appreciate everybody working together to provide our Veterans top-notch care.

Faculty-Resident Research Grant

The applications are due on April 8, 2018 for a funding start date on July 1, 2018.

For JARs, the funding end date is June 30, 2019. For Interns, the funding end date is June 30, 2020.

Attached please find the application forms, instructions, and sample NIH format biosketch (the old NIH Bioskecth format forms are acceptable for your CV)

Please submit your application as a single word or pdf file that includes your mentor’s NIH Biosketch (the new versus old NIH Biosketch format is optional for your mentor).

Please email a pdf file of the signed mentor's support letter with your application by April 9, either as part of the entire application or separately.

Each proposal must have a Human subjects section that describes the protections of the patients and patient data, describe the consent procedure if applicable, status of IRB protocol (to be submitted, already submitted or already approved, as appropriate) etc. This section is required whether to not your project is a retrospective or prospective study, whether patient identifiers are exposed (or not) during data collection/analysis, whether consent is to be obtained or there is a waiver for consent. Please see attached example language that you can adapt to your own specific protocol after discussing with your research mentor.

The next opportunity to apply for a research grant will be in September 2018. Please also find attached scholarship opportunity calendar for this academic year 2017-2018

All trainees at Duke have FREE access to Personal Assistance Services (PAS), which is the faculty/employee assistance program of Duke University. The staff of licensed professionals offer confidential assessment, short-term counseling, and referrals to help resolve a range of personal, work, and family problems.
