Happy DOCTOBERFEST, COVID edition (year 2). Big thanks to our awesome chiefs for kicking the month off in style with FANCY DONUTS! Psyched for much more fun throughout the month. If you are worried about all the fancy donuts, join the chiefs, the med res office team and me for the health pact, which (loosely translated) is drinking more water, early AM Peloton and avoiding Chick-fil-a cookies.
ERAS opened late last week so we are gearing up to recruit the next members of the #Dukefam. Look out for opportunities to sign up for the pre-interview evening meet-ups, My Takes, and other evening opportunities to meet with our future Duke residents. Kayla will start the signups ASAP and we are excited for the interviewees to meet you all. It’s also time for fall advisor meetings if you haven’t already, for SARs to chat with me or Dr. Hargett as you craft your fellowship rank lists and also the time to put in Stead Grant applications. Huge thanks and kudos to Omar Martinez Uribe, Courtney Dominguez, Brandon Durant, Allison Taylor, Ashley Thrower and Andrew Maul for representing Duke IM and Duke Med Peds at the SNMA Regional meeting.

Now Accepting Applications for Global Health Elective Rotations
The Hubert-Yeargan Center for Global Health (HYC) is now accepting applications for eight week Global Health Elective Rotations for July 2022, January 2023 and March 2023. (Please note that while we hope rotations can begin in July 2022, we continue to monitor pandemic conditions at home and abroad and will schedule/modify rotations in coordination with Duke Travel/GTAC and Program Directors.)
Application is open to Duke Residents from the Departments of Medicine and Pediatrics:Internal Medicine (PGY 2), Med-Peds (PGY 3), Med-Psych (PGY 4), Pediatrics (PGY 2), Neurology (PGY 3) and Radiology (PGY 4). Click here for the application.

Academic Hospital Medicine Fellowship Opportunity
Northwestern University’s Division of Hospital Medicine is now accepting applications for their Academic Hospital Medicine Fellowship. This two-year fellowship is designed to provide advanced training to junior hospitalists to launch them into successful academic careers. The program includes formal training, mentorship, and a capstone project. Each fellow receives protected time, ranging from 25-75%, as they focus their training in 1 of 3 areas: Quality Improvement, Medical Education, or Health Services and Outcomes Research. Action Collaborative on Preventing Sexual Harassment in Higher Education
Duke University is cohosting the third annual public summit of the National Academies’ Action Collaborative on Preventing Sexual Harassment in Higher Education. President Vincent Price will give the opening remarks, and Provost Sally Kornbluth will close the event with final remarks. Registration is free to attend the online event.

2021 Stead Tread 5K Fun Run/Walk
You are invited to sign up to participate in the annual Stead Tread 5K fun run/walk on Saturday October 16th at 9:00 AM on the American Tobacco Trail in Durham.
We will start and finish the race at Solite Park and will have an award ceremony and hang out afterward. 100% of the proceeds from this race benefit Lincoln Clinic, which provides health care to the medically underserved population of Durham. Lincoln has been a huge asset to Durham for decades, but especially over this past year. So, I hope we can pitch in to raise money to help them out and show how much they are appreciated. If you want to help but can’t participate in the race for whatever reason, you can help in other ways, just ask how you can get involved!
Registration is $30 (if you sign up before October 1st) which includes a fashionable T-shirt as well as race day snacks. Please invite your friends, significant other, and anyone else who might join. There will be prizes for:

Based on feedback from team members who are seeking COVID testing so they can safely return to work with EOHW approval, the COVID hotline has expanded hours for employees: 5:30 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. 7 days per week.

All trainees at Duke have FREE access to Personal Assistance Services (PAS), which is the faculty/employee assistance program of Duke University. The staff of licensed professionals offer confidential assessment, short-term counseling, and referrals to help resolve a range of personal, work, and family problems. PAS services are available free of charge to Duke faculty and staff, and their immediate family members. An appointment to meet with a PAS counselor may be arranged by calling the PAS office at 919-416-1PAS (919-416-1727), Monday through Friday between 8:00 A.M. and 5:00 P.M. For assistance after hours, residents and fellows can call the Blood and Body Fluid Hotline (115 inside DUH, 919-684-1115 outside) for referral to behavioral health resources.
