Internal Medicine Residency News, October 10, 2016

From the Director

Hope everyone had a safe and uneventful weekend with the storm and that family and friends are safe as well.

We had a busy week here at Duke, with the Intern Retreat (thank you again to JARs and SARs for covering, and to the chiefs for figuring out the coverage) as well as an outstanding SAR talk on the often-forgotten topic of rheumatology by Brian Andonian and a fantastic Chair’s Conference (with cheering section!) by Sarah Nouri.

Hope everyone enjoyed the Doctoberfest Donuts and Cider this week as well.

Other kudos to Annie Reihman and Leah Machen for leading the first GIM journal club, hosted by the ACLT at Dr. Greenblatt’s home. It was a huge success, and we are also glad to have Kevin Shah, Matt Atkins, and David Edelman as discussants. Thanks to Annie and Leah for working with Dani ZIpkin and Sharon Rubin to organize. Looking forward to further journal clubs! Also kudos to Lara Kapp and Becca Lumsden from Tom Gehrig for outstanding work on CAD and to Chris Pumill from Rachel Hu and Peter Hu for his work on pulmonary – great attitude, great patient care! Kudos to Kahli Zeitlow, Matt Labriola and Lish Clark for planning an amazing Stead BBQ, to Rachel Hu from Chris Pumill for some OSH-tastic help, to Kent Fenn from Ravi Karra for great work on cardiology, and to Landon Brown and Ashley Spann from Venu Reddy and Adrienne Klement for great team leadership on VA GM.

Note that the Stead Tread 5K has been postponed until Oct 22 due to the rain. Still not too late to sign up!

Welcome to the Duke Family to Owen Ground, son of proud parents Kelly and Matt! And congratulations to our grads and current fellows Jessie Seidelman and Ryan Jesse on their engagement!

This week you will be receiving a couple of survey emails from the program (and also being asked by your peers about professional development – please also take time to do this one!). Apologies for the barrage, but there is important information we need.

  • First is the fall engagement survey, a <10 minute survey to assess how we are doing as a program.
  • The other is the time-sensitive coaching preferences form (it is not a survey, per se, but a way for us to best match you with your faculty coach). Coaching training for the faculty will be happening on Friday and Monday, and we’d like to get you matched with your coach by Nov 1.  More information to come from the director of coaching at Mass General, Dr. Kerri Palamara, who will be leading noon conference on Friday!

Keep scheduling those advising meetings and also getting started on your Individualized Learning Plan (ILP).  Instructions were sent out by Jen Averitt this week, and your advisor is looking forward to discussing with you!

PubMed from the Program goes to David Kopin for his AHA Abstract with mentor John Alexander: Percutaneous Coronary Intervention and Antiplatelet Therapy on Apixaban or Warfarin: Insights From the ARISTOTLE Trial. David Kopin, Duke Univ Medical Ctr, Durham, NC; Matthew W Sherwood, W. Schuyler Jones, Daniel M Wojdyla, Duke Clinical Res Inst, Duke Univ Medical Ctr, Durham, NC; Basil S Lewis, Lady Davis Carmel Medical Ctr, Haifa, Israel; Freek Verheugt, Radboud Univ, Nijmegen, Netherlands; Lars Wallentin, Uppsala Clinical Res Ctr, Uppsala, Sweden; Christopher B Granger, Renato D Lopes, John H Alexander, Duke Clinical Res Inst, Duke Univ Medical Ctr, Durham, NC

Have a great week,

Aimee
