Internal Medicine Residency News, October 10th, 2022

From the Director

Let’s go, week 2 of Doctoberfest!  And some beautiful fall weather to enjoy. Congratulations to our SARs who are winding down the very busy interview season.  If you are planning to apply/interview in hospital med or primary care, we have not forgotten about you.  Please reach out to me or an advisor for any assistance in this process.

Have you gotten your flu shot? Please remember that this (or an approved exemption) is required! Tia will start to be chasing you down (figuratively, but don’t let it be literally) as the deadline nears to have this taken care of.  If you get your shot outside of the Duke system, please be sure to upload into VaxTrax so that you get credit for your stewardship.  COVID boosters (the bivalent omicron kind) are also available in Clinic 1J as a walk-in.  Takes about 15 min total.

Thanks to those who came to our noon conference on JAR/SAR schedules.  We will be sending out the slides and some additional information for those who missed it or want to have it in writing.  Please plan on attending the Oct 28th “CICR Information” noon conference from your CICR leads Drs. Barrett Bowling and Juliessa Pavon, as well as some CICR alumni.  This is a great info session for upcoming CICR JARs as well as interns interested in potentially applying for CICR next year.

Check out our interns getting in the DOCTOBERFEST “spirit” (ba-dum-bum…)

Kudos

Kudos this week to Matt Townsend for an outstanding Cohen Conference and Connor Moseley for a fantastic SAR talk.  Also to Liz Kobe from Nivita Sharma for a big sprint that led to some very patient-centered care, to Emily Romanoff for earning a gold star for her excellent patient care, and to our ACRs Tyler Couch, Matt Goodwin and JT Tanaka for an amazing LEADS conference.

Pubmed from the Program

This week’s pubmed from the program goes to Jackie Kercheval for a publication recently in the journal Cureus!

The MedConnect Program: Symptomatology, Return Visits, and Hospitalization of COVID-19 Outpatients Following Discharge From the Emergency Department.

Pickett Road recently added a new team member, Dr. Kennedy Wolfe, who after completing her residency at UVA was a faculty member at Eastern Virginia Medical School.  She will begin teaching in the resident clinic during the 2023-2024 academic year.  We are very excited to have her join us!

Dr. Wolfe

From Dr. Wolfe: “I am a Hillsborough native and excited to be back in the area. I love primary care and am excited to build a patient panel here. In my free time...what free time, I just had a kid! But I used to play ultimate frisbee quite a bit!”

Feeling down? Need to talk to someone? Opportunities for Wellness
All trainees at Duke have FREE access to Personal Assistance Services (PAS), which is the faculty/employee assistance program of Duke University. The staff of licensed professionals offer confidential assessment, short-term counseling, and referrals to help resolve a range of personal, work, and family problems. PAS services are available free of charge to Duke faculty and staff, and their immediate family members. An appointment to meet with a PAS counselor may be arranged by calling the PAS office at 919-416-1PAS (919-416-1727), Monday through Friday between 8:00 A.M. and 5:00 P.M. Prioritized GME appts are now available also at 6 pm and 7 pm! For assistance after hours, residents and fellows can call the Blood and Body Fluid Hotline (115 inside DUH, 919-684-1115 outside) for referral to behavioral health resources. Another resource is Duke Outpatient Psychiatry Referrals at (919) 684-0100 or 1-888-ASK-DUKE. https://www.hr.duke.edu/pas/
